GAMES X Magazine Weekly (May 1991 - April 1992)

I really enjoyed the Mean Machines article in this months Retro Gamer and remembered that I have the complete GAMES X Magazine collection (including the free preview issue). GAMES X was a weekly magazine in the UK that was released every Thursday, priced 75p, and ran from 3rd May 1991 to the 1st April 1992. It was published by Europress Interactive and created by Hugh Gollner.

I can't find anything to do with this magazine anywhere on the internet, so this could be the only complete set to exist so I am keen to share it with anyone that is interested. Would Retro Gamer like to do an article on it?

I am happy to answer any questions that any of you might have about the magazine, just use this thread. If it proves to be unpopular, I might try to sell them on ebay. As you can see I've include 3 random pictures from the magazines.

Regards :)

Yep, that's the first thing to do. Or send them to Mort and he'll do them ;)

I'm pretty sure the magazine was every other week, though I can't quite remember. It might be weekly, but you'd know as you have the copies to hand.

In my days at Live, I was sat next to one of the ex-writers from GamesX - it was a grand magazine indeed. Apparently, he would answer the letters in rather foreboding tones or something.

Regards,

Shaun.

It was weekly, or at least the early issues I have were.

It was also dreadful. I assume weekly publishing deadlines don't allow for much research or revision of articles.

You'd think but stuff like Autosport seems to do okay.

That said, if the primary idea of weekly was to beat the monthlies to stories pre-internet, they probably had little to no time to play some of the games.

I remember buying that! I was a paperboy (no relation ;) ) at the time and used to reserve it.

God only knows what happened to my copies; parents probably threw them when I moved out.

Some kind of website, or a least a set of scans would seem appropriate, since this is a slice of history.

Strange that I have the complete collection and not a single PM...

I must admit I'm warming towards the idea of getting these scanned to preserve them. However, it's a big job. I'll let you know if I decide to host them (I'll post the link here if I do).

Still, the offer is still open to the writers of Retro Gamer... would you be interested in doing an article on Games X?

Over a year ago I bought the complete set for about £7.00 on ebay and then sold them on for about £40 pound. So there is another set out there somewhere, unless your the person who bought the set off me. :?

No, no my friend. I bought these original! £40 is a fair price though...
