Quake is 12 years old

Post by retrogarden » Tue Jun 24, 2008 12:58 pm

Turns out on my trawl through the blogosphere that one of my favourite old franchises is celebrating an anniversary.

Twelve years of Quake

What were your experiences of this game? My mates (who had a PC long before me) thought it was a poor mans Doom, but as I didn't have a PC when Doom came out, I thought Quake was the better game, as I managed to get it online and play it for hours (the setup did take just as long!)

I didn't play Doom when it was first came out but I did play Quake when that was new and was blown away by it. Obviously it isn't as good aesthetically nowadays, but I think it remains a highly playable game. I prefer Quake 2 in one-player mode though. :)

My mates bedroom, on his brandnew P90, 16 MB RAM, 1.2GB HDD and 2MB S3Virage intergrated graphics card. He installled the demo of quake and ran it in software, looked amazing, we played that for hours......lol

12 bloody years........

My mate's bedroom, P75, 8Meg of Ram, 800Gig HD, 14kb Modem.

I remember the IMPULSE 9 cheat (good fun for a basic lan game at my local computer shop) and Ziggurat Vertigo level as well.

Was nice when they gave you a sizeable portion of the game away as shareware then as well! :)

First PC game I ever bought. And I hate FPS games. That's how ubiquitous the damn thing was.

I've got it on the Amiga. It's as fast as a dead snail. I still enjoyed it before I got a PC and a 'net connection at my house though (this was only two years ago)...

i've never enjoyed the Quake games... or Doom for that matter. i suspect it's because they do something i've never liked in a shoot 'em up, it's possible to run out of bullets. That and they make me feel queasy with all that bobbing up and down! =-)

I bought Quake from GAME in 1997. I bought a PC in 1999. That's how much I respected this game. It was a big pack with extra maps and allsorts in one big box.

AND THEN I SOLD IT 2 YEARS LATER!!!AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH111!!!

I wish I still had it....just done a search on eBay and all I can find is Enemy Territory, there's just too much to wade thru.....mind you, I am looking for a replacement for Battlefield 2142, which I have played TO DEATH online....

Am I right in thinking that the Quake series has had more games released than most other FPS???

Think Unreal has had the most (console wise) followed by Quake.

I was more of a Heretic fan myself.

I must admit i never liked Quake, too dark and dingy, normally like the D&D style settings but didnt like Quake and still hardly play it.

Quake II however i loved, played that a ton single player and multi player and still enjoy that game, great FPS but not a fan of Quake

Doom?
Yeah, but not including the expansion packs, Doom has only had what - Doom, Doom 2 and Doom 3? Or am I missing something.

Just seems to me that there has been way more Quake sequels released.

But maybe thats just me.

Hey, if you search Quake -Enemy -Territory it will search for all quake auctions that do not contain those 2 words, make sure you put the minus in.
