What Controllers Do You Use

Post by fouldsc » Wed May 14, 2008 5:04 am

I use MAME and WinUAE on my PC and am always looking for good controllers to play the old arcade and Amiga games on and wondered what everyone else used ?

Am using the PS3 Sixaxis for both - works really well.

Am thinking about an X-Arcade but need to try it first!

I've got a single joystick X-Arcade, might put it on ebay soon. I used to use it for all my games but as i've got a MAME bartop machine i havent used it in a year or so.

Only problem would be postage, quite a heavy bulky item.

If anyone lives near Manchester they can have it at a cheap price as i dont really use it much

A mish mash.

I bought an X-Arcade kit (just the stick and buttons) and an ipac to plug them into. That's set up in a twin stick config that covers most bases.

I also have a favoured PS1 mini arcade stick that I like, nice short shaft on the stick and its fairly responsive (though buttons could be better). That's my 'quickie' choice. USB adapter, obviously.

Some games I'll revert to dual shock, depends.

For stuff like Space Harrier I have a Sidewinder Force Feedback analogue stick I picked up for a couple of quid.

Ditto I have a Modena wheel for the PC thats decent enough.

Mostly the DIY X-Arcade jobbie though. It just feels right to have a big boxy controller with proper arcade buttons. Dreamcast Arcade stick has filled the role in the past, but its only single stick.

Thanks - quite interesting. I use a PS2 controller as well - but some some of the MAME games I do hanker after a big proper arcade controller !

With my media center pc i have a 2port psx to usb adapter that i use for consoley style stuff, and for arcade things i plug my Hori EX2 in

My work pc has my special Snes multitap that I converted to work on a snes, or a pc parralell port. This lets me use snes pads and snes arcade(ish) joysticks on my work pc. Occasionally I'll plug a wired 360 pad into the work pc too

A playstation 1 pad, my 360 controller or my xbox arcade stick, depends on what game I'm playing really but I use the playstation 1 pad more often than not.

For the PC (even though I hardly ever play on it) I use a Logitech pad like this:

It really surprised me just how great it is, the D-Pad is pretty amazing considering and is far superior to the Dual Shock, very easy to hit diagonals and other complex maneuvers.

If I was wanting a pad for emulators on PC though I would think about getting a Magic box adapter and using a Sega Saturn mkII pad, as for me it's just greatest pad by a country mile.

i always use a simple thrustmaster firestorm (the one without analog sticks). It's comfortable, resistant and cheap.
