Favourite emulator

Post by greyscalp » Thu Apr 17, 2008 6:19 pm

Just bought the Magic Engine emulator, purlely for Super Star Soldier and Final Match Tennis. 2 of the most sublime games ever in my opinion. Such a good emu! Amazing range of options and enhancements. Was well worth the tenner :D

Magicengine is mine too, though its the only one I really play anyway (Other than MAME..)

If you like super star soldier, check out soldier blade. One of the best PCE games.

Overall I'd probably say Vice64 (Xbox version preferably). It's just the most complete emulator out there for me, especially when used in conjunction with Gamebase64. It runs everything I chuck at it and does it perfectly too.

Vice

Post by greyscalp » Thu Apr 17, 2008 7:19 pm

Yeah Vice scores high too. Specially like the 2xscale option for that psuedo anti-aliasing cartoony effect on certain games. IK+ being a particular favourite. Excellent control options too. Always a biggie with me.

DOSbox. It's opened up a world of amazing games I missed out on by not having a PC in the 80s and 90s.

I'd tried to dabble in it before but only half-heartedly, and every time a problem came up I just gave up and left it. Recently I took it upon myself to figure it out properly and I'm having a blast. It's a lot simpler than I imagined it to be, as well.

My favourite emulator is either WinUAE or WinAPE - both have re-opened my favourite machines (Amiga and CPC) to me, and this is what brought me back to world of Retro Gaming and emulation.

Mame by a mile. There was never any arcade machines around my area when I was growing up and as a result I missed out on playing a whole mountain of games. It also helped when it came to trying games that never got a home console release as well as testing out games before I buy the PCB's to see if they are worth getting.

I like Magic Engine, Gens, and NeoRage :)

WinUAE gives me the fear

I liked Retrocade. Had a really nice GUI IMHO. It's even more outdated than NeoRage though ;)

Is that a dig at me? ;) Most of my emulators are old but they all work fine so why change? :P

By a hair's breadth, I'd have to say SpeccyDS on the DS, closely followed by Power64, a C64 emulator for the Mac. Most of Xport's Xbox stuff is also very good.

Arcade: MAME 32 Plus! Plus!
Neo Geo: WinKawaks
DOS: DOSBOX & DBGL frontend
Mac: Basilisk II (once you set it up properly it's awesome)
C64: WinVice (CCS is supposedly better, but I hate the interface)
Atari 8 bit: Atari Winplus
Spectrum: Emuzwin*
Amstrad: WinApe
Amiga: WinUAE (again you need to know what you are doing)
Atari ST: STeem
NES: FCE Ultra
SMS: Meka
PC-Engine: Ootake (why pay for Magic Engine?)
Mega Drive: Fusion (for some reason Gens and co stopped working)
SNES: SNES 9X (ZSNES is better but again I'm not really fond of the interface)

I also use emulators for 32/64 bit systems (P64, ePSXe, SFF) but I'm not really interested (I prefer older stuff). I mostly do it because you get better graphics than playing on the original system (higher resolutions, AA and so on).Other emulators for other systems are used occasionally, but they are not regulars.

The Gamebase frontend gets a good beating; useful little thing.

*Does anybody know how to setup Emuzwin properly to play the 256 colour Speccy games? Image is all garbled and once I have activated the "256 colours" I don't know how to change the settings.

Of the ones still maintained I'd say ZSNES (although their next big version will surely be a large improvement), MAMEUI / MAME32, DOSBox and ScummVM (if you count it).

I loved NeoRage back in the day but technically it's not what it should or could be ;)

not trying to hijack the thread, but what was the first ever emulator you used? mine was the SNES emulator ESNES way back in the 90s

I remember my first emu I used was Nesticle back in the late 90's so that I could finally play Mega Man 5 and 6 (Its always Mega Man with me...)
