Games that have taken over your life

Post by Randall Flagg » Thu Apr 10, 2008 5:45 am

Everyone has a game or two that got you so hooked that it took up pretty much every waking moment that you weren't at work.

For me its been:

Battlefield 1942 (Desert Combat Mod) - addicted for 6 months!! and probably cost me my marriage

Tomb Raider - PSX

The Simpsons - Road Rage

Mostly RPG's from about 15+ years ago, then online gaming.

LOM & Doomdarks Revenge (Speccy)
Bards Tale (Speccy)
Ultima V (ST I think)
Natural Selection (Half Life Mod) <-- If played properly as a team fantastic

I can relate to BF1942 desert combat was in a clan that played this for fun only around 4 years ago. It was a CS clan from the early days but hackers soon put any enjoyment out of that game for me.

Now play BF2142 whenever I can but no where near as often as I would like to. A quite underatted team game.

Any GTA game (most recently San Andreas). They usually last me for a good 80 hours, have a feeling that IV is going to beat that mark!

Without a doubt Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion, I played that from May 2006 and am still playing it now (still need to finish quite a few quests!)

And back in the day when Capcom were still making 2D fighters I remember one summer being completely consumed by Marvel Vs Capcom 2 (After only 2 weeks the internal clock stopped at 99:59:59!)

Omega 5 at the moment, trying beat my highscore - I was ranked 51 on the live leaderboard at the beginning of the week (will have slipped down substatally I imagine by now!).

Game that I have been obsessed with in the past include:

R-Type on the Master System

Bust a Move / Puzzle Fighter - PS1 was obsessed with these to the point I had dreams about them on a night (not healthy!!)

Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2 - PS1

FF7 - played it straight for about 4 days until I finished it

Halo

Tekken Tag Tournament (Arcade).

The staff at Namco Centre (Trafford Centre) used to put it on free play after they closed wach night at 10pm.

Then we would have to be dragged off it when Security wanted to go home.

Also played many tournaments in London (Gudge Street/Leicester Square), Manchester (played 9 hours straight one day!).

Was also lucky enough to play this game in Minnesota (Mall of America), New York (Canal Street/Chinatown) and Texas.

On the home front, Burnout 3 Takedown consumed me for several weeks.
A very addictive game, especially for collecting Gold Medals.

The Retro League forum. That took its toll until eventually there was a big blowout.

Most recently would be GTA Vice City - I finally stopped playing it when the game clock hit 50 hours, but that didn't count the number of times I restarted after failing missions - I must have tried that damned helicopter mission that unlocks the second island about 25 times before I completed it - or just loaded the game up for a random killing spree! :D

In the past...
Dune II and Eye of the Beholder on the PC
Repton 3, Citadel and Imogen on the BBC Micro
SEUCK on the C64 ;)

I guess you could say Bubble Bobble (various versions) must have taken up a great number of hours/days over the last 20 years.

Oh, and various Football Management games of course...
