Ten NES games...

Ufouria: The Saga - Like Metroid, but more Kirby-cutey-ish.
Layla - Happy little runny-gunny thing.
Super Mario Bros. 2 - The only good Mario game, which isn't actually a Mario game. Oops!
Kirby's Adventure - Of course!
Castlevania - The magic starts here, of course.
Abadox: The Deadly Inner Adventure - Hardest shoot-mupp ever, yep.
Akumajou Dracula: Boku Dracula-kun - Like if Parodius was applied to Castlevania.
Kattou-Niden/Samurai Pizza Cats - Nice little platformer.
Cocoron - Platformer where you get to make your own protagonist.
Color A Dinosaur - Colour in the dinosaur of your choice.
My comics blog (mostly lesser-known UK stuff from the 80s and 90s)

Mr Gimmick, can't recommend it enough. You'll probably need to play it via emulation though

Was playing NES the other day, given the plethora of titles recommended here and other than the obvious, I'll recommend a game called Vice: Project Doom. Great gameplay to this game.

That was mentioned on the previous page. It' a great recommendation though, so worth mentioning twice :) I have a pirate Famicom version lying about somewhere. Gun.Dec it was called over there.

Don't think anybody's mentioned it so far, so I'll recommend Action In New York, a brilliant shooter by Natsume (creators of Omega Five). It plays a bit like Omega Five actually. There's comedy value in the recommendation too as it was called SCAT in the US. Nice.

LOL! So I flick back a page and see that it was me that recommended it over a year ago. It is good though. :)

I was playing some Omega Five last night, what a top game that is, but I am finding it very tough, yet to get off the 2nd level. :( It's like the spiritual successor to Forgotten Worlds.

Indeed. Or a spiritual successor to Action In New York ;) Brilliant game. I was *so* close to 1CCing it when I stopped playing it.

Another recommendation from me: Recca Summer Carnival '92. Completely mental shooter, doing things you would never believe the NES was capable of --

I'm beyond a passionate gamer, games are my entire life and have been since the mid 80's and I have turned on many people to some of the greatness of gaming. Videogames are more than a hobby for me or something to do with friends, they are a passion, my view of art and science and my escape from world that is put together by extortion, hate and crime....but with that said, keep in mind..this is my personal NES favorite list......GET INTO IT! :

-Super Mario Bros 1,2 and 3
-Castlevania
-Mega Man 2
-Crystalis
-Final Fantasy
-Star Tropics
-Chip and Dale:Rescue Rangers
-Section Z
-RC Pro AM
-Terminator 2 (hey I liked this game!)
-The Legend Of Zelda
-Mike Tysons "Punch Out!"
-Guerrilla Warfare (best co-op multi-player game for the NES)
-Nightmare On Elm Street (another game I loved regardless of it's LJN brand name)
-Paperboy
-8 Eyes
-Milons Secret Castle
-Abadox
-Back To The Future: Part II and III
-Battletoads
-Double Dragon
-Blades Of Steel
-Burgertime (it's not nearly as good as the arcade, but still a damn classic)
-Super C
-Donkey Kong
-Dr.Mario
-Ghost N' Goblins
-Wizards and Warriors ( the entire series is awesome )
-Super Pitfall
-Super Spy Hunter
-Metroid

and a few more off the top of my head I can't recall at the moment, but I'm sure there are at least a handful more of games.

But that is my personal all time favorites for the NES that I think either helped shape a genre, industry or style at the time and all the way up to modern games now.
As horrible as some may have been, they did it first and had the idea and if it wasn't for them, some of the modern games that are out now..may never be..either from learning from the past mistakes or from their brilliant ideas of the hardworking teams of back then.
I still have my NES next to my Wii,PS3 and 360 to this day because I still play it here and there.

Of course I keep all my other systems either A:in the closet or B: in my wife and I's bedroom and play them from time to time as well, I own next to every system currently besides the real rare ones that were in fact, just horrible.
My Neo Geo AES is my prize possession though and it's hooked up in my office because Metal Slug and all the other games still capture my heart to this day.

I hope that out of my list of games, the people whom live in the Euro area had access to these, in America we did and I have a feeling some where only seen on American soil and it's a damn shame because art and sound like this should be shared with everyone all over the world!

NES is my favourite games system so here are my recommendations..

I CANNOT recommend Street gangs (River City Ransom) as the password system is so long (over 30 characters) that you will never want to play it.. just use an emulator with save states to play this one..

I recommend:

Super Mario Bros 1 + 2 + 3
Duck Tales 1 + 2
Little Nemo
Rush N Attack
Zelda 1 + 2
Snake rattle & Roll
Ufouria The Saga
Felix The Cat
Adventure Island 1 + 2 + 3
Boulderdash
Gremlins 2
Blue Shadow
Probotector 1 + 2
Balloon Fight
New Zealand Story (Dont bother with Bubble Bobble on a PAL system as its very slow - or Rainbow Islands which is dire)
NES Open Golf
Kung-Fu
Vice Project Doom
Megaman 2 + 3 + 4
Jackie Chan's Action Kung-Fu
Double Dragon 2
Power Blade
Mighty Final Fight
Punchout
Gargoyle's Quest 2
Batman
Kid Icarus
Kirby's Adventures
Jackal
Little Mermaid (honestly)
Little Samson
Wacky Races
Battlekid (New NES game released in 2010 on green cart - amazing)
Fire N Ice (Solomon's Key 2)
Over Horizon

RIIISE FROM YOUR GRAVE

FWIW, here's my top 10 NES games (that aren't Mario 3):

Faxanadu - Great RPG from Hudson.
Adventure Island - Also by Hudson.
Battle City - Kinda like a modern Combat. Great in 2 player mode.
Contra
Gradius II
Castlevania - Three of the best Konami games ever made.
Megaman 2 - All the Megaman games are excellent, but 2 is incredible.
The Legend of Zelda - Playing this on my Wii at the moment. I love how you can shoot with your sword on full health.
Kung Fu
Road Fighter - Two simple, but addictive, arcade classics.
