can anyone identify this spectrum game?

Post by flowevd » Fri Feb 15, 2008 4:57 am

hi

at my friend's house in about 1989 we played a game on his spectrum whose name i never discovered. it involved at least two elements.

one was a sideways-scrolling 'tunnel' (think nemesis or similar) in which a spaceman sprite battled through some enemies.

the other was a boss. it was a big 'hive' at the bottom of the screen from which slinky-like 'worms' rushed out of one hole and into another. you had to hide in the corner then kill the worms.

i have posted a (very) feeble illustration of this arch-enemy on photobucket

can anyone help?

From the first part of the description it kind of sounds like either Crosswize or Sidewize, I'm not sure about the boss part though as that doesn't ring any bells.

Sounds like Sidearms or Forgotten worlds. Maybe even Exolon?

I think there is definately some confusion here, R-Type came out in 89, and that is definately a descriptionof the heart not hive boss in R-Type, unless its being confused with the guy riding the Dragon in Dragon Breed.
Just where is Mickey T?

My first thoughts on this, having seen the illustration and not read the text, was Critical Mass from Durrel - however this isn't a side-scroller, more a isometric scroller.

You have unmistakably described the 2nd level boss from R-Type, the others levels are quite Nemesis like, obviously. I can't think of anything else it would be.

The first thing that came into my mind was 'Agent X 2', but the second section in this game does not really match up to what you're saying. :(

Sounds like Zybex to me - had it on the C64 and it did come out on the speccy.

The 'worms in the holes' port wasn't a 'boss' on Zybez though, was it?

It also came out on the Atari 8bit and Spectrum, e.r. I think!
I thought they were just part of the levels?
But, I can see whare you are coming from, spaceman, scrolling, worms etc...

Actually, it is beginning to sound like Forgotten Worlds, in the Egyptian Stage there is a large worm you fight..
