Post by Stuart@retrogamer » Wed Dec 12, 2007 9:49 am

We're looking to follow up the platform and run-and-gun lists with a beat 'em up and racing top 25 for future issues...any game suggestions would be mighty handy. Cheers guys.

Dead or Alive series.

Well that's it, you can close the thread now, question answered.

Why is everyone glaring at me?

Alright then, I also nominate Tekken 3 (NTSC version) and Street Fighter Alpha 2.

Honorable mention to Guilty Gear for having the best cast of characters.

Can't think of any racing games.

Some reasoning also:

Beat 'em ups:
Way of the Exploding Fist: The first beat 'em up on home micros with any realism. Great sound effects and graphics for the time, and still playable now. A fab oriental score, too.

IK+: Still my favourite beat 'em up. Fantastically balanced gameplay, and although it has a number of moves, it has an inherent simplicity that means you can always give it a quick go.

Barbarian: Palace's head-choppin' romp had a very evocative atmosphere, and perfectly captured the sword 'n' sorcery genre in a way few other games ever managed.

Racers:
Nothing by Epyx: Pitstop II is just really bad these days. As is Super Cycle. Just stand well clear, everyone.

NOT OutRun: Seriously. It's f——ing awful.

Kikstart II: No chance this'll make the list, but it's a game I still play, and it's definitely a racer!

Chase HQ: Compelling bash 'em up gameplay thrown into the standard racing mix. A tad long in the tooth now (oh, for a decent update), but still worth a bash now and again.

Stunt Car Racer: I know the Rev hates it, but I think this is a fab mix of roller coasters and drag racing. If someone would port this to the DS and add a few courses, I'd happily pay 20 quid for it. Still, perhaps Stu's not alone these days, seeing as I'm the only one to include Crammond's masterpiece. *SAD FROWNY FACE*

Mario Kart: One of the few racers to totally fall in with the whole idea of having fun. The original incarnation is one of the best things the SNES ever had, although these days the DS version is the one that grabs me.

F-Zero X: Once this shows up on Wii, it'd going to be bloody hard to stop myself from buying one. The ultimate in space-style racers, pissing all over W!p30uT (or however they spell it these days, with their new-fangled replacing letters with numbers).

Burnout 2: Fun, crashes, and more fun.

OutRun 2: The kind of arcade racer we used to dream about in the 1980s. Sure, it's limited (to some extent), but it looks wonderful and plays brilliantly.

Dotstream (bit Generations): Bit of an oddity, but this is a racing game, despite its odd presentation. And as a racing game, it's the one I've been playing more than anything else to date. It's hard work to beat the later courses, and has a neat layer of strategy.

OutRun2 won't be appearing, simply because I think it's going to confuse people if we put a brand new game in a top 25 (especially as it could only be number one).

We're having a huge discussion about its relevance and whether we can get away with including it at this very moment.

How brand new is OutRun 2 exactly?

Anhoo:

Driving
Buggy Boy (C64)
Hard Drivin' (Arcade, ok its censored but was quite an experience at the time
Eddie Kidd Jump Challenge (If Craig can have Kikstart II  )
Mario Kart (All versions, DS is prob the best but SNES is my fav)
Driver (PS1 - not sure if it will get in but i've wanted a feature for ages!)
Race (Vic20 - my first racing game experience!)

Fighting
Way of the Exploding Fist (C64, ok IK+ is far superior but that was one of my first "wow" 8-bit moments
Dead or Alive (Jugs, puppies, norks and baps)

Driving games

Out Run - Its not f---ing awful ! Was a great game in the arcades and a ton of great memories for retro gamers.
Chase HQ - Classic !
Stunt Car Racer - Loved this game on the Amiga
WEC Le Mans - Liked the arcade and Speccy version was very good
Full Throttle - Great retro classic game
Mario Kart - Amazing SNES masterpiece
Pole Position - Classic arcade game
Enduro Racer - Good arcade and Speccy conversion
Micro Machines - Brilliant on the Megadrive 2 player
3d Deathchase - Does this count ? Classic retro game

Beat em ups

Renegade - Great Speccy game
Target Renegade - Even better
Double Dragon - Great arcade game and GB conversion
Double Dragon II - Sequel was better
Final Fight - Another classic
Way of the Exploding Fist - Best fight game on the Speccy
Barbarian - Classic
Golden Axe - Preferred this to Double Dragon
Kung Fu Master - Classic arcade game

I wouldnt vote for Mortal Kombat, think its very overrated but its obviously going to make the list. Thought the list would be for retro games, i really hope XBox games dont make it at all.

Beat em ups:

Double Dragon
Theres Probably not a person on this forum who has'nt played this, easy yes but incredible fun as 2 player.

Bruce Lee
Fun little platformer with limited beat-em up elements, had this on both speccy and C64.

Kung fu master
Arcade heaven back in the 80's simple yet addictive. bosses were a bugger until you found the best way to sort them out.

Way of the Exploding fist
First of this Gerne I played on the spectrum so fond memories.

Streets of Rage 2
Love the first on the megadrive very slick presentation and playability and the sequel took it to the next level.

Racers - Not really my thing

Outrun
Fun in the arcade sit on music was the most memorable part, and still hum it today.

Hang on
Master system was my first console bought new, super hang on the first game, very simple racer but still fun, And it came on a card!!!!

Beat-em up racers

Road Rash
Probably the best EA Mega drive game in the world

Chase HQ
Ok its not really racing but the car gets beaten up, and its a great game so there.....
