Underrated Platformers

Post by Seraph » Wed Dec 05, 2007 4:29 pm

Hello Everyone, i'm new here obviously, been reading Retro Gamer for a year, caught up via the recent retro gamer disc that came out!

Anyway, first topic!

I got to thinking today about games that i loved when i was younger (mainly platformers) that never really received much recognition, and perhaps people thought they weren't that good, but two for me that i really liked were -

Talmits Adventure (Marvel Land in the US)
Rolo to the Rescue

Anyone else?????? Underrated methinks!

Any other underrated platformers or anything?

Qwak on the Amiga is a really underrated platformer (imo) - it went straight to budget release and some people usually see that as a sign of being crap. Qwak however, is probably the cutest and possibly one of the most challenging and fast paced platformers to grace the Amiga.

Although it is very popular, I'd say that Rainbow Islands doesn't always get the credit it deserves either. Yet again, another cheesy but fun platformer.

Firstly, totally agree on Rolo to the Rescue. Get past the cutesy stuff and organ-grinder music and it's a very interesting game to play.

Others off the top of my head:

[broken record]

Ristar - Mega Drive

[/broken record]

Little Nemo - NES
Kid Chameleon - Mega Drive
Wiz 'N' Liz - Mega Drive
Black Tiger - Arcade

I remember the original Rick Dangerous shamefully wasn't given a Megagame in Your Sinclair, sparking a mini-campaign. They showed a lot of love for the brilliant sequel though.

I agree with many of the other titles that people have mentioned, i'm a huge fan of Dynamite Headdy, have been playing it a lot recently on the Virtual Console, along with Wonderboy in Monsterworld! That can probably join that list.

Let me think of a few more -

Anything from the Wonderboy series (SMS, MD, ARC, TGX-16)
Rodland (Atari ST)
Rocket Knight Adventures (Anyone think the sequel paled in comparison?)(MD)
Mischief Makers (N64)

Was a big fan of the Tiny Toons games. I remember getting Busters Hidden Treasure along with Rocket Knight Adventure one birthday...ahhhh!

Also, maybe....the SMS Sonic series? always thought they were slightly overlooked(not underrated, maybe just overlooked) because of their MD brethren! The original SMS Sonic was the first Sonic game i played - i couldn't believe how different the MD series was when i eventually upgraded!

Over at JAMMA+ we're playing Flicky in the high score challenge this week - I'd heard of it but never played it before. It's good fun.

I've been playing the Rick Dangerous games a lot recently, I wonder why :D
