I think its RKS PC at fault, then his own screenie has used either the PC colour depth or he's saved it at a lower one.

User error. As usual ;)

Excellent, here is a screenshot that is predominantly a faecal shade to help out RKS.

Hmm, like I said, all colours appear fine to me elsewhere, it's just this shot that's gone weird. I'm using Firefox on a normal (albeit, slightly old) XP system, the settings indicate the colours are at the highest setting. I saved the picture as a gif with default settings using Polyview...

Does this look normal to everyone? (sorry to hijack the thread!)

Nope, that looks heavily dithered, like you're in 256 colour mode.

What is this 'highest' setting you've got in Windows display properties? It shoud be True colour or High Colour (iirc).

I suspect a graphics card driver issue...

So a PC in 256 colour can't properly represent the correct colours for a Spectrum game? I'd have thought that cyan/magenta etc would include these within the 256 colour limit?

Sorry Merman and Pants and everyone, I don't have a clue what the shot is from (despite my ability to see its poo-coloured graphics). It looks like a lightgun-style game that doesn't use a lightgun though... :|

Its not that it can't do it, its just that the colour conversion can go via several palette switching choices and RKS system isn't doing it very well. So while technically you shoud get a 'near enough' representation, the reality doesn't always work that way. You can get similar odd colour changes when you save a GIF out as an 8 or 16 colour palette from an original high colour image.

RKS, you could have positioned that dialogue box a bit better ;)

Right enough, settings look ok.

You're not surfing using a mobie net stick? They (sometimes) use compression at the far end, so you don't get a true image. It saves on bandwidth to keep your usage down though. Or its possible you've enabled some similar form of compression.

Yes, I'm using a T-Mobile 'dongle', or whatever they're called

And I positioned the dialogue box intentionally! ;) She's got hot pants on though, she's too pure and innocent to do nude pictures! :P

I reckon T Mobile is the cause of your problem.

We had one of these a couple of weeks ago but returned it as we discovered they do all sorts of nasties, in particular they actively block Skype unless you have one of their higher end contracts.

We bought it specifically for Skype (our daughter has just moved to Spain) so we returned it and now have one with '3' that works properly.

I've not checked if all the mobile providers compress things, but I'd expect its common enough. What's happening is that you request a web page. The T-Mobile servers then compress that page on the fly before sending it to you. It can greatly reduce your bandwidth usage due to compression, but as you've found it can be at the expense of image quality. I just happened to read that T-Mobile did this while I was trying to sort out the impossible Skype problem.

Whether you can control the level of compression, I don't know, but judging from my short experience with them, I suspect not, as its happening at the far end. It just means you have to judge screenies by their content rather than their colours or pixel count.

Now we've solved that odd problem, back to the task at hand:
