Carmen Sandiego on the C64 is from Brøderbund, XBox is EA. Don't know how many Carmen games were out? I know the little character, but don't remember his name now??

Oh, right... I meant the Brøderbund ones...

And one of the animal types seen in the picture appears in the game name.

It looks like a version of Xevious, very similar screen layout and graphics...

I thought the same, also the bomb impacts on the ground look the same. But that's the only thing that seems to be similar.

To be fair, I should include another screen to give a more full picture of the game:

Could it be Salamander 2?

I'm a fan of the first but never given the sequel more than a cursory glance.

Nope, not Salamander 2.

edit: Perhaps some clues are in order.

This game was released in 1987. As far as I'm aware, it was never converted to any home formats. It's the forth game in what many consider to be a series, though only in a fairly loose sense of the word, as the games aren't necessarily directly related.

The first game in this so-called series was released in 1980, and was your standard garishly coloured sprites on sparkling starfield vertical shooter, though it featured the novel idea of a different player ship for each of your 3 'lives'.

The second game came out in 1985. This vertical shooter sees you battling over a scrolling landscape, and features collectable upgrades to your ship that increase its firepower and its size.

The third game game out in 1986. Again, a vertical scrolling shooter, though this time you start out as a big flying robot that can separate, Transformers style, into three flying ships. When you get killed, you lose these components, but you can collect them again in a manner similar to the preceding game.

And then came this game in 1987... but what is it?

Footnote: There was a fifth game (presented as a direct sequel to the well-known second game) that only saw a release on the PC-Engine, and then there was also a 3d version bearing the name of the second game (but with '3D' appended) on the Sega Saturn. I haven't played either of these.

Well a three ship vertical SHMUP released in 1980, has to be ‘Moon cresta’.
I’d say the ‘follow-up’ would have to be Terra Cresta (and this looks similat to the pic)… so …

I think there was a ‘UFO Robot Danger’ game released as well, or something along those lines!

Then there were two other ‘Terra’ games.

Is it ‘Terra Cresta 2’, maybe!?

I just found a screen shot of 'Tera Cresta 2', and the screen layout is diferent.

So I'll go for 'Tera Force'

ooh, getting close!!!

Terra Cresta 2 was the Pc-Engine game. Our mystery game came out before that, and after Dangar - UFO Robo.

Interesting thing about this game: Not only does it alternate between above ground vertically scrolling stages and underground horizontally scrolling ones, but at certain points you can collect a mega-bomb that can be used blow a hole in the ground, which you can then choose to fly into to enter the horizontal underground stage, or ignore and continue on your vertical scrolling way.

Going from the description of the series, sounds random enough to be made into an RG article, unless it has already. :?: :?
