Favourite Run-And-Gun games

Post by Darran@Retro Gamer » Tue Oct 02, 2007 9:48 am

So we're planning a run&gun feature similar to our platform one from quite a few months backs. Would be interested in hearing what your favourite games in the genre are :)

CONTRA - specifically NES CONTRA!

Although you Brits got shafted with some basterdized Probotector thingy.... Trust me on this though, CONTRA IS THE $HlT!*

* Apparently, this is a good thing, and basically means that the game is awesome in some bizarre, contemporary vernacular I hear regularly around my teenager-infested household.

Vertical or Sideways scrolling?

Off the top of my head:

Outzone, Metal Slug (all games prior to 3), Turrican, Mercs, Gunstar & Shock Troopers.

Without a doubt Contra 3 on the SNES. I’ve got the Japanese version and as well as having soldiers instead of Robots it has an amazing cover that captures the feeling of the game perfectly. The game was hard but never unfair and I love the way the game is paced, starting quite sedately and then as the levels progress the action becomes more and more frantic (the last boss is insane). There are some really memorable set pieces in the game too I’ll never forget seeing the mode 7 plane flying towards to screen dropping those bombs setting the level on fire, stunning. I still play this game to the present day on the SNES and VC, one day I’ll finish it on hard and see the true ending!!

I would love to see some coverage for Midnight Resistance, I loved it for the Amiga!
I'd also like to see info on Turrican, Metal Slug, Contra, Gunners Heaven, Gunstar Heroes, Dolphin Blue.
I'd love a run and gun feature that looked into some of the lesser known games of the genre, just to broaden my selection of games within the genre.

Oh, and not sure whether you class it as a run and gun or more of a platform game but I'd always welcome more Megaman coverage.

So we are just talking just about side scrolling platform shooters, or can we include overhead games as well?

Also, can the modern third person shooters be considered the "evolution" of the genre?

Green Beret. I'm rubbish at it now, but invariably I end up having a go whenever I'm fiddling with new emus or reconfiguring old ones. Its just one of those games I find curiously compelling. What's really annoying is I can't remember what our arcade's cab looked like and nobody seems to have a picture of an original one.

Obviously gotta include the original Metal Slug as it's probably the best example of the genre. The amount of work that went into designing and animating the graphics must have been immense at a time when 3d was just coming into vogue. Tight gameplay and perfectly paced levels and one of the only games I've ever played that contains satrical humour. It's just too good.

Gunstar Heroes and the (underrated GBA sequel) have got to be worth a shout. Oh, and Alien Soldier is something of a cult classic (if you can get past the controls).

If we're also talking overheads then how about Toaplan's legendary Outzone?

What about Sin & Punishment? Ah wait, I've uncovered Darran's cunning plan. This feature is gonna be one long excuse to play S&P for the next couple of months.

Not the best of the genre (not by far) and not even a typical specimen, since it had puzzles too, but its cover must be at the first page of the article. Archetypical '80s art. I love it.

Probably Gunstar Heroes.
