After suggestions on this thread, I've created this new thread for an experimental Retro Gamer forum top 100. However, rather than voting for your favourites, or listing a shed-load of games, let's make this one a bit different.

Everyone should choose just one game from one format (i.e. you get one choice only) to include in a "top 100, but not in order, readers!" list (the numbers are just there to figure out how many spaces are left), taking care not to duplicate those that have gone before, and also saying why the game is in the list.

So, I'll kick this off with:

100. H.E.R.O. [Atari 2600]
One of those games that appears fairly limited on the surface, but gradually ramps up the difficulty, until you end up battling the final few, very tricky levels. The reason I'm going for this particular game is because I've played it on a bunch of different formats over the years, and I still play it now (often on the GBA, via emulation). Despite completing it many times, it's still a joy to play, and that really sums up a "top" game, in my opinion.

99. Bomb Jack [ZX Spectrum]

After reading the 92% Crash Smash review, I knew I had to have this game & I wasn't disappointed. This game gave me & my mate hours & hours of fun & in the past 6 months or so I've rediscovered it. And it's still as playable today as it was back in 1986.

98. Midwinter II Flames of Freedom [Amiga]

Ok, so it ran like an obese slug and it's perhaps not an immediately obvious choice, but it was groundbreaking in so many ways. It created a massive, fully 3D environment to explore. It allowed you complete freedom to create any character you wanted, tackle the missions in any order and by any means you cared to try. It had some funky tunes. If any game is crying out for a modern makeover then this is it. Absolutely brilliant.

97. Ghostbusters (Master System)

Ghostbusters on the C64 was my first must have game. It was the first game that I truly loved. It was also one of the few games to actually make it feel like you were taking part in the events of a film. However, when I played it on the Master System, I ditched the old love and moved onto a new. While keeping the same core gameplay, extra features (such as the ability to upgrade ghostbusting equipment via an in game shop) were added that improved a game I had thought perfect. I recently bought a Master System to play this again and it is still excellent.

I like the idea for this thread as it will undoubtedly produce a unique list but to call it a true top 100 is misleading as it only takes the opinion of 100 indiviudals into account. Oh well, on with the show.

96. Shining Force III (Saturn)
Shining Force III is one of the best RPGs of all time because its epic story was the maturest there has ever been. Spanning three discs, the game told the tale of a civil war from three different perspectives (one on each disc) the Empire, the Republic and a group of renegades. By aligning the player with each side it showed that war is not a black and white issue and showed how the complexities of a mass movement have an effect on individuals. I honestly believe that if you play all three discs then you will learn more about humanity than you would from any other game. Oh and the combat bits were ace too...but I'll save my explanation for another time. ;)

95: Bubble Bobble (C64/Arcade)

An absolutely cracking game, especially in 2 player. Working with your friend to clear the level in the quickest way, while being able to rack up immense scores. Then working against them to get the best pieces of fruit/power ups. A quality game that still stands up to hours of play(as proved by me and a friend at the weekend!)[/b]

94. Vagrant Story (Playstation)

Released towards the end of the Playstation's 'official' shelf-life, Vagrant Story really pushed the machine to it's limits graphically. An absolutely superb-looking game with a glorious dark orchestral score. A little bewildering at first, but the dedicated player would uncover one of the most intricate and 'complete' videogames ever crafted. A truly gripping story populated by multilayered characters and an extremely rewarding equipment and weapon system for those of us inclined to tinker. The sense of place is extraordinary, lending itself to true immersion.

93. Thunderforce IV (Megadrive)

Brought a much needed adrenaline rush to Shmups - as anyone who remembers the Strite level will attest. Great soundtrack, graphics, and playability, its simply a superbly made game.

92. Ultima VII Prt 2 Serpent Isle (PC)

Okay so you needed to fast PC to play it on (20mhz 486 wow!), and you needed to be a master of DOS, config.sys and autoexec.bat to get it working properly. But, this game had everything; state of the art graphics, fully immersive gameplay, completely involving plot, deep richly crafted characters. It is still regarded by many as the pinnacle of RPGS. And you could even bake bread :) I lost about 3 months to this game and still didn't finish it

91: Alex Kidd in Miracle World on the Master System

A great platformer, I played it loads because it was free - built into the Master System 2.

The graphics were cute and colourful, the music was brilliant and catchy. And the gameplay was solid. It was also pretty challenging, 1 hit and you die, only a couple of lives (with a few available to collect if you explored a bit),and no continues. But the controls were spot on, so it balanced out. If you died, it was because you made a mistake.

There was plenty of variety of the levels (mountains, castle, underwater, forrest) While they still all kept within the overall style of the game. The addition of vehicles like the motorcycle and gyrocopter was really fun.

Then there were the odd boss battles where you had to beat them in a game of rock, paper, scissors.

90: The Sentinel - C64 version

I could have picked any of the Geoff Crammond games, but this is the one I've played the most. No 100-page manual to wade through, no complicated menus, get in there and play 10,000 levels!

The 3D landscapes were incredible at the time, the short sound effects and jingles add to the atmosphere, and the first time you see the energy bar indicating you are being scanned, you panic.

It's pure gameplay, nothing to distract you from getting higher to look down on the Sentinel. I've loved it since the day I bought it - which is (gulp) twenty years ago...

89. Llamatron (Atari ST version)

Robotron was a superb arcade game but Jeff Minters Llamatron took it to the next level replacing the last human family with a flock of goats in need of rescue and the robots of the original with a parade of ever wackier enemies. With its almost perfect learning curve, frenzied aural assault (more so if you owned the 1 Meg version), mad power ups and albeit simple sprites it was a game that dragged you in, stole hours of your precious time and left itself seared onto your retinas. What's more it was shareware and could be yours for the princely sum of a fiver.

Even now I can hear the scream of the 'Mandy Monster'...

88 - Dungeon Master (Amiga)

Along with Shadow of the Beast, this game sold an Amiga to many people when it was released. The RPG was traditionally an obscure Japanese gaming format, or some ASCII blasphemy like Nethack; but in 1991, the RPG Dungeon Master appeared and refined and popularised the genre.

Why people loved it is a thing with as many reasons as the time an average Speccy game would crash when loading. Some were immersed by the claustrophobic first-person dungeons. Some found the detailed character party system of 4 heroes perfectly balanced and versatile. Some adored the clever runic spell system. Some merely enjoyed the exploration and cunning environmental puzzles. Some, like me, enjoyed running in a blind panic from malicious mushrooms.

87 Resident Evil 3 - (Dreamcast Version)

Since I first played Resident Evil on the Sega Saturn, I have become very fond of the series. So when I brought the third one I was impressed. The Dreamcast version was smoother and faster. The game itself was awesome. The whole idea of being hunted throughout the game made the whole process more edgey and frightening. Of course the dialogue was laughable but thats what it's all about.
