I really liked the SH2 experience, but I didn't find most of the actual gameplay that appealing. The story and setting were what kept me going.

Elite does deserve to qualify, though - it's an all-time classic whether it is liked or not. I hardly touched it but, even all those years ago could see its quality. Nevertheless...

Over on Something Awful someone has done a playthrough of the first 4 titles using video and pictures with some great commentary.

It was so much better than actually playing them.

I'd pick six others before I got to Sonic.

I could have chose a few (AW, Elite or Sensi), but went for AW.

Whereas I would pick every game there, with the possible exception of Silent Hill 2 before I got to Elite

The only reason I ponder Silent Hill there is I hate the gameplay with a passion but I loved the "playthrough" someone posted over on SA. That was as much for his commentary as anything though.

I always thought Pirates did the trading thing better than Elite against a far more interesting backdrop and game mechanic.

I voted Sonic 2, largely to represent the whole 2d series, although 2 was probably the pinnacle, perhaps due to only being peripherally written by Sonic Team but also by STI, responsible for Comix Zone, which readers of RF Online would have known I near worship.

Difficult to argue with that, but for me the atmosphere of the first two games made up for it. 3 was bearable but the gameplay in 4 was atrocious (even if it was scarier).

Indeed, and I enjoyed read and watching the playthrough immensely.

Sonic 2 is the reason there are still sonic games being made today, except they will never be as good as this. I hope to be corrected one day. It was sonics peak imo
