synth geek alert

Post by elmosexwhistle » Tue Sep 04, 2007 5:26 pm

i LOVE the sega genesis/mega-drive sound...FM synthesis is really rather incredible and can so everything from twee little brass sounds (think the level with the aeroplane in sonic 2) to nutty metallic clangy timbres (which is all over the streets of rage 2 soundtrack) and crazy distorted stuff too...i spend quite some time using 2op/4op FM synthesis, sometimes to recreate these wonderful timbres...some times to mangle them out of all proportion, and dropping them into some NIN like death techno dx7 has a very similar chip to it...and i believe some of yamahas old home keyboards used the same chip...

I LOVE sid aswell, especially when it's arpeggiating very the incredible amount of PWM you can put on the sid's oscillator's results in some extremely meaty phat bass when used with some portamento...i don't have a prophet 64 card at the moment so i'm using a great free vst synth plugin called Unknown 64 which does the sound perfectly...auf wiedersehn monty would be a makor SID highlight :)

NES sounds get a bit boring after a while...but it's the harmony included in it's soundtracks which are really pretty...the music on NES *duck tales* probably being my fave, especially the moon level get these sounds you'd either need to by a MIDI nes or just grab hold of tweakbench's peach, toad and triforce plugins...

and thats that :)

That really would be telling :P Hence why I uploaded them to my web server
Have you got one for R-Type?
Wish I had, let me know what level and if the tune has a name and I will look and see if I can acquire it from somewhere!

Has no one mentioned Bubble Bobble yet?

Annoyingly catchy tune!

Not very retro, but also enjoying the tunes in Cave Story on my GP2X at the moment!

Has to be the original Lotus/Top Racer and more recently Thunderforce V. I ripped the Thunderforce soundtrack from the original Saturn disc using iTunes - It even found the track names - Result!!
