Best background music

Post by RetroENZO » Sat Aug 18, 2007 5:57 am

Okay. This has probably been done before (so if someone can point me in the direction of the original thread, I'd be happy to look)... but what's your favourite pieces of background music in games (retro or not)?

The sort of music that is memorable, and actually makes you go play the game to hear the music.

For me:
The entire Grand Theft Auto: Vice City soundtrack
Resident Evil 2: Library theme
Most of the Silent Hill 1/2/3/4 background music (captured perfectly in essence on the movie too).
Final Fantasy VIII: Balamb Garden, Timber Owls, Battle Theme
Outrun: Magical Sound Shower

Street Fighter II: Ken's Stage, M. Bison's Stage and Balrog's Stage all stick in mind as being very memorable as well as favourites of mine.

Super Hang-On: Outride A Crisis and Winning Run - both wicked tunes.

Outrun: Magic Sound Shower - defo a good one.

Golden Axe: don't know the name of the tune, but it's the one in the backgrund of the first level!

All the tunes from Rez!

and finally, Lemmings on the Amiga - the tunes keep you tapping your foot and humming along throughout the game.

Apart from the GTA games, one of the most memorable is The Settlers on the Amiga. It takes about 15 minutes to loop (though it does repeat parts of it in that time), and it's brilliant.

There are loads of C64 ones, but they have been mentioned many, many times on lots of threads.

I really loved the theme from Risky Woods on the Mega Drive..

I only played it a little in the 90's (I found it rock hard and gave up after a few weeks... some gamer I am).

But the tune sticks with me all the years on.

Stage 1 of Alex Kidd in Miracle World, all the music in Wonderboy in Monsterland and both Commando and Ghosts N' Goblins on the C64.

Outrun - All of them!!!
Lemmings - The Can-Can tune that plays on the first level (I think that's what it's called)
Disposable Hero - The tune on level 5 ROCKS!!!
Sonic The Hedgehog - Green Hill Zone
Shadow of the Colossus - The big orchestral pieces of music that play during battle (and possibly the best pieces of music that has ever come out of the PS2)
Jaguar XJ220 - Thrash Pig (WOTTA TUNE!!!)
Super Hang-On - Winning Run
R-Type - Boss
Dragon Spirit - First level

Would love to mention the Gradius 3 opening tune* but that's not background music innit?

*Damn, I mentioned it!

Lets see.....

Arcade -
Hang On (All of it) - great atmospheric racing music.
Space Harrier

Console -
Resident Evil 1 - just brilliant. Actually gives me shivers hearing it. Anyone that's a fan of "Spaced" on Channel 4 in the UK like me will have seen an entire epsiode using segments from this - just fantastic.
All Wipeout games.
SSX Tricky (PS2) - Best use of music changing to fit what's happening on screen, with the tunes going all wishy-washy echoey as you get big air
AND it's got RUN DMC in it!
AND you can play with the Menu Music for AGES, just layering those sounds on top of each other.

Castlevania SotN - PS1.
Shadowrun - SNES.
Actraiser - SNES
Outrun - Arcade.
Metrocross - Ams CPC
Renegade - Ams CPC
Exolon - Ams CPC
Infestation - Amiga/Atari ST

Loads of others but they sprang to mind first.

Wasn't that the episode where Tim actually believes he's in Resident Evil? And the episode that Shaun of the Dead was inspired by?

Indeed it was. It was Resi 2, btw.

My favourite piece of game music ever, is the Ending Music from Wonder Boy III: Dragons Trap on the SMS. Brings a tear to my eye everytime...

GTA Games have the best soundtracks bar none... Awesome...

But for non real licenced songs it would probably be Sonic 1 and the Mario games for me

Streets of Rage 2 is still my favorite gaming soundtrack of all time. A real showcase for the Mega Drives somewhat weak soundchip.

all of the soundtracks to grand theft auto. also sonic r for the saturn it think they took more time perfecting the music within the game than the actual game play itself. I WANNA BE A SUPER SONIC RACER!!

plus the first mario and sonic games had an amazind soundtracks. i still find myself humming them at work!!
davey bosher says relax!
