Game Soundtracks

Post by redleader28 » Mon Feb 20, 2006 10:41 am

I was wondering if any of you peeps actually ever brought or downlaoded soundtrack to Games. Me personally I've brought a few just cause I loved the game.

MGS - Sons Of Liberty OST
GTA Vice City OST
GTA San Andreas OST
Silent Hill OST
Final Fantasy 7 OST.

I brought GTA V.C just because of the 80's feel to it.

I agree with and have both of those. Silent Hill's soundtrack was so good, they're using it for the movie I believe!

I've got the Radiant Silvergun and Gradius V soundtracks. Gonna be ordering Mushihimesama with it's soundtrack on Friday. It's not normally my thing (wouldn't put it on my ipod) but it's fine to listen to when surfing the net IMO and it's nice to own them as little extras to the games.

I own Final Fantasy VII and Castlevania: SOTN.

I've downloaded countless remixes from www.ocremix.org, www.vgmix.com and http://remix.kwed.org

I collect videogame music, both downloaded and bought soundtracks and a hard drive chock-full of emulated chiptune stuff. You could say it's my obsession :) I'm quite happy to put a folder full of SIDs on random play while I'm pottering about, and yep - I was a kid who taped game music and listened to it on his walkman at school. I just have a huge passion for it since falling in love with the C64 all those years ago.

These days the soundtracks don't quite have the same charm but there's still some excellent music out there. I do lean towards the chip stuff because for me it's part of the artistry that's specific to videogaming, like pixelart once was. Some wonderful sounds could be coaxed out of those old chips :D

Funnily enough I've never really been a fan of mainstream music. Perhaps because I never got an emotional connection to it the way I did from game music. I'm also keenly follow the remix scene, though it does tend to be a bit stagnant with regard to exactly what gets remixed (not another Chrono Trigger song, please!). I have to say I have absolutely no musical ability myself though, so I'm not in a position to criticise I guess.

One of my very favourite things is when the game companies' own musicians would do a remix album. People like the Konami Kukeiha Club and Falcom's JDK Band putting out awesome albums of jazz or hard rock remixes. Who would have thought a jazz fusion remix album of a Japanese dating sim would become one of my all-time favourite albums?

In a fit of conscience about a year ago I decided to start buying VGM to offset the downloaded stuff, and just to own the originals because it's nicer. These are the original albums I own at the moment:

It's pretty much the only thing my money goes on these days apart from the occasional game. I love my VGM - it would be the thing I scooped up and saved if the house burned down

Just about the only complete soundtrack I have is a nice CD of the three Shadow of the Beast sets, converted from bizarrre-o-format to AIFF and then to MP3.

I wish I had the time and money for it.

As it is, I do have a lot of game music in computer format; Deliplayer is my current obsession, a superb Amiga music format player. Coupled with the Unexotica site with thousands of Amiga game tunes, it's a great way to listen to some of the Amiga's finest moments; of which there are hundreds.

Another big fan of video game music here. I have tons of music that I've downloaded, as well as a few volumes (Shenmue) that I've purchased. In fact, I'm listening to game music as I write this - the soundtrack to Knights of Honor, to be specific.

Some of my favorites:

Shenmue Orchestral Version
Knights of Honor
God of War
Actraiser Symphonic Suite
Final Fantasy 8
Xenogears Creid

I have dozens of others, those are just the favorites :)

I don't own much game-related music, though I do listen to retro radio like Slay and a couple of others quite often.

I downloaded the soundtracks to Parappa the Rapper 1 & 2, just for fun. I have the pre-round practice BGM from Parappa 2 as the ringtone on my mobile.

My copy of Grandia 2 on the Dreamcast came with a soundtrack CD, but I don't think it's all that great.
