Well, this will all be a bit(lot) personal, and I skipped the 16bit generation to boot (not that I had any of the 8-bit ones, but I both saw and played those).

1. Colecovision. Purely for the vibes it gave(gives?). I _know_ the hw is not anything special, but they created an aura of uniqueness on the basis of their software alone. Which is what should matter when you pick a piece of hardware really.

2. Atari 7800. This is way at the other side of the scale though. This is what I usually end up doing: Judging it on the basis of the hardware and its potential. Very special (sucky sound though). And in my mind it is a 1984 product anyway. (Looking at the hardware was pretty much how I got into the Amiga too...)

3. PS2. In 2007 you could say it is because of the software, but when I first read about it it was the first console in ages that "clicked" technically with me. Happy that it got so many good games too.

very definite order...

1)saturn (jap flavour - for capcom and shooters by various companys)
2)neo geo AES (for brawlers and shooters also)
3)gamecube (for zelda, metroid prime and all the other nintendo stuff)


4)GBA (for zelda and metroid)
5)wii (only got one yesterday)

see a pattern :-) ?
