Best side scrolling Beat em Up??

Post by bonerlaw » Thu Jul 19, 2007 7:41 am

Hi there!

I am a huge fan of the old side scrolling beat em ups, particularly the arcade ones around the late 80's early 90's and seeing Sunset Riders in this months RG, it got me thinking......"What is my favourite??"
I love Final Fight, Turtles, X Men, the list goes on, but which is the best??

Also, out of interest, which do you think is the worst (hint; Simpsons........)

Oh, and if this has been posted before...................I dont care so neh neh!

The best, well ‘streets of rage’ was good on a lot of different platforms for it’s time.
‘Final Fight’ on the Mega CD was a good updating of the genure.

I think ‘Cadillacs and dinosaurs’ and ‘Bad Dudes vs Draggon Ninjas’ were underrated, and well worth a look on MAME.
I also like 'Dungeons and Dragons: Tower of Doom'

Beats Of rage is well worth a mention, along with it’s myriad of re-packs.

I think Altered beast was always a bit too choppy, and never ‘felt right’ to me. Nothing substantial, the game-play always just seemed a bit off even on the arcade version.

My personal fave is the original Streets of Rage.

Played through countless times with my younger brother and never tired of it. Special mention to the elevator level which was ace.
I'd buy that for a dollar!

I'd say Final Fight, because it started my craze of side scrolling brawlers. But there are so many others, like the Konami X-Men game or Asterix which weren't perfect, but I had quite fun with them.

Now for the worst: Although some might hang me, I'd say Double Dragon and Double Dragon 2. The third one was a bit better, but imo miles away from the Capcom bunch.

loved - SOR 1 + 2
Golden Axe
DragonNinja (very underrated)
Batman Returns (Snes - not the crappy Amiga one)
Final Fight (Mega Cd - HELL YEAH!)
TMNT Arcade
Asterix
Double Dragon 1 + 2
and i thought The Simpsons was quite good.

worst - Altered Beast (crap is too good for this one)
Combatribes
Double Dragon 3 (one and two were ten times better)

Vigilante was too fricking hard. still have it on the amiga....and its still crap now! Completed Double Dragon on the speccy. Still remember the end: Marian gets lowered from the ceiling by rope and you go off into the night. that was the one player ending. cant remember if the two player ending was different.

2 player, you had to fight against each other at the end for the girl.....I think, it's years since I have played it right through.
