Well, would you believe it, I'm just getting into the PS1... but having had my head stuffed firmly up my transdimensional vortex for the past decade, honestly know next to nothing about the available software catalogue.
So, can anyone recommend some decent games? I like:
Stuff like Wipeout
Stuff like R-Type
Platformers - "thinking" ones like Abe's Odyssey are great, but I'm equally into full-on bouncy-bouncy arcade fun
Stuff like Pac-Man (of course!)
Not interested in: fighting games, football/sports games, or (for now) RPGs.

Resident Evil 1 2 and 3.
Overboard- piratey fun.
Jumping Jack Flash-3d platformer with a big difference.
Rayman- rock hard but fun
Kurushi-puzzle
Kula World-puzzle
Parappa The Rapper and Um Jammer Lammy
Metal Gear Solid-The only 3D MG game that's actually fun.
Rollcage 1 +2 -Wipeout ish.
Should see you through a little while.

Shmups-wise You have to lay your hands on R-Type Delta at the very least (it's my favourite in the series).
If you're going to have the means to import you can't go wrong with Gradius Gaiden, Einhander, and Zanac X Zanac.
The PS1 is really a great machine, A bit maligned for its massive popularity and large amount of shovelware, but on a pure classic games basis I rate it alongside any machine, and above most.

id have to agree with R-TYPE DELTA but also go with R-TYPES.
Silent Bomber is quite good. Its like Bomberman but the levels are open and you blow the sh!t out of anything and everything.
and if you like fps, i heartily recommend MEDAL OF HONOR and MEDAL OF HONOR UNDERGROUND. both excellent and pushes the PS1 way past its limits. also has some thinking parts too.
then theres always BUBSY 3d....its not too bad, but it could have been better.
on a scale of one to ten, i'd give it 4.
