I've just read it's a 30% failure rate!!! Over $1 Billion to sort it out.

Well, I just phoned Microsoft. It seems I need to arrange shipment myself, but the repair will be free.
Thanks to MC1 for flagging up that letter in the original post, I was worried about having to find the cash for an out-of-warranty repair.
