Game Music

Post by wdsfld » Tue Jun 26, 2007 9:45 am

Hey :!:

Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions. Im playing a DJ set at a night in Manchester at common bar . http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fu ... D=68729785

Its a video game themed night.

Its not a dance club its more about appreciation of good game music. However it cant be too classical. So far ive picked some katamari tracks and a few 8bit tracks such as James bond JR and super punchout. I dont want to go too heavy on 8bit though as i think it may get irritating as well as being pretentious.

Doesnt have to be upbeat or dancy. Theres some good metroid prime stuff i want to play.

Some of the music from Out Run. I suggest some of the arcade originals, the remixes on the recent Out Run Coast to Coast and perhaps the C64 music from Turbo Outrun.

I'm assuming you've had a look at http://www.ocremix.org/
its a mixed bunch , but if you've ever wanted a latin dance version of Blanka's theme, or a guitar solo version of Last ninja 2's central park loader , then its worth a look. Not really much use for a club , but the "The wingless's" stuff is pretty good(sort of arranged strings versions of lots of stuff , like zelda and metroid. OCRemix Also about sixthousand guitar solo's of the final fantasy VII music (mainly to be avoided).

Just having a look through the site. looks, as you said, jumbled but i like 'the wingless's' mario pearl song.

I love the silent hill soundtrack, i need to think more about a theme though. I cant really go straight from katamari into silent hill. But i think a darker broodier set might be better.

Its not a club, its a pub. We're setting up duckhunt in the corner, it should just be a laugh.

Thanks for the suggestions. Please keep em coming!!

You could also try playing:

1. any tune from Rez (PS2)

2. Golden Axe main theme (MegaDrive)

3. almost any tune from Street Fighter II (arcade - The World Warrior, Champion Edition or Turbo/Hyper Fighting)

4. Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge and/or Lotus Turbo Challenge II main themes (Amiga)

5. Space Harrier II - level 1 theme (Amiga or Mega Drive)

6. Super Hang-On - either Outride A Crisis or Winning Run (Arcade, Mega Drive or Amiga)

7. Outrun - main theme (Arcade)

8. Mortal Kombat II - main title theme - not the intro one but the one where you see the MKII logo (Arcade, Mega Drive or Amiga version)

9. Super Mario Land 1 - main theme (NES)

10. Tetris - main theme from GAME A (Game Boy)

Some of the music from F-Zero would work quite well, I think.

Just an idea from one DJ too another ;)

How about

Tangerine Dream - Midnight In Tula from their album White Eagle.

This tune was used as the Level 5(istr) tune on Last Ninja 2 (C-64), and it`s mighty fine.

Sounds cool, do you ever DJ in Leeds? or elsewhere in Yorkshire?

What about Kernkraft 400 with Zombie Nation? 8 bit chart music for the masses.

Or you could dig out Dr Spin's Tetris mix.

Surprised none of our American visitors have recommended Buckner and Garcia's Pac Man Fever either.
