Panasonic 3D0

Post by oldtimer » Sun Sep 27, 2020 4:25 am

Recently found my Panasonic 3D0 in the loft plus a huge pile of games.
I forgot how good the system was after playing it again for a while.

Any other 3DO users?

I had one for a bit (FZ-1 frontloader) and enjoyed it. I think the console itself looked cool, the pad had a ridiculous flex length, and there were some great games. Road Rash, Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Killing Time, Need for Speed, and even the crappy FMV games (which are a lot of bonkers fun!).

I really like the bizarre FMV and experimental stuff from the era too. The likes of Plumbers Don't Wear Ties for example...absolutely awful but it's like an insane acid trip.

Well I still have all my 3DO games but no longer have the console. I love that FMV game with Tia Carrere from Wayne’s Underworld where you die at the beginning and your brain is put inside a robot.

Played Pyramid Assault at an event last year and that was class FMV game I’d not heard off before

Are there any good exclusive 3D0 games except 3D0 Road Rash? I would love one for the retro hardware but not sure I'd play on it much, as everything (I think) is available far more cheaply on PC CD-ROM. Or am I forgetting something?

Yeah, there was a deal done between the 3DO company and Creative Labs. I think it came as a package. You got a CD ROM drive, plus the 3DO Blaster card.

I think I have 3 FZ-1's and an FZ-10, all bought cheap from eBay when nobody wanted them. Road Rash is definitely the stand-out game, though Need For Speed is pretty good too. I remember seeing a demo unit in a sweet/computer shop back when I was at school, seemed impressive until I saw the price-tag!

Yeah. Prices are really climbing for 3DOs these days.

I got mine 2 years ago, and I'd reckon it has doubled in value in the interim. Won't be long before it's back to its original price!

Had a couple 3do's while out hunting, first one was an unboxed fz1, in a second hand shop he didn't know what it was until a previous customer mentioned it played games so I bought it for £30, then a year later in a different second hand shop seen a mint boxed fz1 and he wanted £60 for it snapped his hand off that was about 6 years ago now and still have it.

Thinking about it, even Road Rash was ported to the PS1. Does anybody know if there is much difference between it and the 3DO original? I want to play it again but don't want to buy another 3DO!

It's still not a great experience to emulate the 3DO. The best emulator is closed-source and in Russian, and the best Retroarch core hasn't been maintained in years and has poor audio which is a bit of a shame given how the soundtracks are the best things going for a lot of the games.
