Is it time for the PS1 to receive the retro treatment?

Post by batman877 » Wed Jun 13, 2007 5:52 pm

Is the original Playstation (1995-2001) old enough to be considered retro? You can still play the software on modern machines so does that mean that the PS1 hasn't passed on yet?

Many people may criticise Sony for different things - but you have to hand it to them, they support their consoles for longer than be reasonably expected

Whether it's retro or not is debatable .It's certainly old enough , but that's not the only crtieria

I onsider the DC to be retro , but not the PS1/. Why ?I can't really say , it's just my own personal view.Even odder , I class the DS as retro gaming

If we are talking in terms of "What should be on the pages of Retro Gamer", then it's fair to say I have no problem with EARLY PS1 games and series being covered - particularly in the form of Making Of's.

But a "Retroinspection" - too soon I feel.

No problem with some early games appearing in the mag either

Tomb Raider may be a topical one , also Ridge Racer 1 and perhaps one of the more less well known like Jumping Flash

It's 2007 now, at 2000 the 16-bits would have been considered retro by that point.

The likes of TR are more than a decade old now too.

Or 2006, if you count when they stopped making it.

If we take a little known mag called Retro Gamer as a guide, we can deduce that several PS1 games have already featured extensively in its pages so therefore it must be assumed to be 'officially' retro, whatever our personal feelings on the matter.

It's listed in the Buyer's Guide section of RG... that's good enough for me!

Also, it was launched well before the N64 and nobody really questions that console's retro credentials.

I second that motion! Driver was a PS1 classic.

I bet it also has a few nice stories behind it, too. Reflections got their 3D car 'stripes' with Destruction Derby and to go from a fairly simple variant of Super Sprint to a fully-fledged, driving-adventure was a pretty impressive leap.

I think the driver series has been tarnished a bit by the whole "driv3rgate" incident.
Anyway .....covering PS1 games means that stuff like legacy of kain can get a bit of coverage!
