History of Video Games - Book Recommendations

Hi folks,

I am after some recommendations for a book for my son. I want to buy him a good book about the history of video games. However, I want the book to be from more of a UK/European or worldwide perspective, rather than a North American perspective. In other words, I would like:

Good coverage of 8 bit computers in the 1980s like the Spectrum, C64, Amstrad, BBCB, etc, - rather than concentrating the NES, as a prime example. I realise the NES was a big player from a global perspective. However, I suspect North American authors may concentrate way too heavily on it (possibly to sell books to North Americans), at the expense of the 8bit computer culture elsewhere in the world.

Good coverage of 16 bit computers in the late ‘80s & early ‘90s, such as the Atari ST and Amiga – rather than the whole “Sega vs Nintendo” scenario dominating the 16bit era.

(My son watches a lot of YouTube videos (standard), and seems to think the whole world owned a NES in the 1980’s. This has to stop!)

Thanks for any help!

Supercade: A Visual History of the Videogame Age 1971-1984 is one of the best books I read. Its 400 pages and she does cover home computers like the Commodore 64 and the Video pac

Arcade Fever is also fab but mostly concentrates on arcade machines.

A good start- I'll give these guys here a shameless plug(!)- are some of the bookazines packing great RG articles into various topics and genres- Hardware vol 1 & 2, various books on specific consoles and computers etc, available on my favourite magazines site under specials section

I'm sure plenty of other suggestions will appear too!

Hi There!

Not sure what his tastes are, but my book (The Micro Kids) is meant to be a window into the Micro boom of the early 80s
and what it was like to grow up during that period with micros e.g. Speccy, Commodore, BBC, Atari, Amstrad etc. :)

On amz and most other online stores.
