Re: PS3 - retro??
If you're going for GTA5, also consider Red Dead Redemption, it was a highlight of PS3 for me (not that I played much PS3 games).

Re: PS3 - retro??
Question - is it worth me logging in to the PS Network? I do have a PS ID which i've used on my Vitas. But i've hacked them so tend to stay away from anything PS official.

Re: PS3 - retro??
Maybe create a new ID to be safe. I believe its still free to play games online on PS3 so it might be worth it for that. Not to mention newer games might want you to log on to download the most up to date firmware.

Ugh, GTA won't install. It's done a software update but just gets stuck at installation. I'm guessing it's a scratched disc? Returning stuff to CEX is my least favourite thing.
Also bought NHL 12 which installed from disc no problem. NHL was 50 pence!

Re: PS3 - retro??
Possibly, though PS3 discs are based on blu ray discs, which have a better success rate over scratches than DVD.

Yeah I waited a while before buying a 360, and wouldn't get rid of it now, it's got some cracking games, and SO cheap it's ridiculous. I'd get the PS4 once it's in the same boat, when everyone else has moved ongreenberet79 wrote: ↑Tue Jul 30, 2019 6:09 amThat was my thinking. I'd been in CEX and noticed some cheap games. It's an era I completely skipped (I did get a Wii about 2011 and as much as I love it it was hardly the new era of HD) so hopefully I can strike now while the iron is - well not hot, but cheap haha.

You could also do a lot worse than GTA IV, Liberty City Stories and Red Dead Redemption (which is like GTA only with a cowboy western theme - also made by Rockstar). Also check out Blur and Split/Second Velocity if you like driving games with shoot-em-up elements.greenberet79 wrote: ↑Tue Jul 30, 2019 6:41 amI'll probably get GTA 5 and NHL 14 which will keep me happy for a long time.

Re: PS3 - retro??
For me the PS3 doesn't fit my personal definition of "Retro" - which is at least 2 generations old with no support from the copyright holder.

Ha, my tongue was in my cheek, I don't think the PS3 is retro.
However I've now got one with three controllers and ten games for £41. Definitely the time to collect.

Re: PS3 - retro??
Retro or not, stores like GAME are doing their best to get rid of their PS360 era of games no doubt to prep for PS5 and XBox Whatever. so no doubt its the perfect time to collect. Many games as the £1-4 range, others not reaching as far as £10 except for a small few exceptions for whatever reason (Rarity, limited edition, etc.) and consoles pretty cheap as well.
Even digital games go on offer for cheap as chips fairly often, sometimes even less.

I never even thought of looking at the digital store.ALK wrote: ↑Sat Aug 03, 2019 7:39 pmRetro or not, stores like GAME are doing their best to get rid of their PS360 era of games no doubt to prep for PS5 and XBox Whatever. so no doubt its the perfect time to collect. Cash converters are selling 360s for £39.99. if they go under £20 I might get one. Maybe the price will dip again after Christmas.

Re: PS3 - retro??
There are some real gems available for the 360 from the digital store - HD ports of Radiant Silvergun, Daytona USA, Alien Hominid, Nights into Dreams, Ikaruga, Jet Set Radio and that's just off the top of my head. The prices are a little bit steep compared to Steam but nothing to grumble about and, for 99.9% of the time, it's a very fast and efficient service.greenberet79 wrote: ↑Sun Aug 04, 2019 8:03 amI never even thought of looking at the digital store.

My 360 cost about £60 3 years ago and it would have felt like a bargain if I'd paid over £100. I'm not sure if the PS3 is going to offer much that I haven't already got with the 360 which is why I've held fire on getting one. I'll probably wait for the PS4 to come down in price.
Re: PS3 - retro??
But again, the 360 has weekly sales so even if the prices are too steep its worth waiting for a sale or if said game is given away with Games with Gold.English Invader wrote: ↑Mon Aug 05, 2019 4:56 amThere are some real gems available for the 360 from the digital store - HD ports of Radiant Silvergun, Daytona USA, Alien Hominid, Nights into Dreams, Ikaruga, Jet Set Radio and that's just off the top of my head. SEGA had a bunch of games in the recent summer sale and some of those games of theirs you listed were around the £3-ish mark, some like SEGA Bass Fishing were even at the 89p-£1.69 mark.

Re: PS3 - retro??
Got myself some more today -
GTA liberty city
GTA IV
Red dead redemption
Goldeneye reloaded
Medal of honour
£9.95. All in good condition too. Goldeneye is brand new.
That's me done for now unless I see any other NHLs for cheap.

Re: PS3 - retro??
its a great time to pick up some PS3 games, can I reccomend anything by Platinum Games:
Bayonetta
Binary Domain
Vanquish
Metal Gear:Revengence (yes, even with Raiden as the lead its a great hack and slash with a fantastic soundtrack and OTT battles)
Also cant praise Red Dead Redemption enough, get the GOTY edition, as undead nightmare is a great add on. Zone of the Enders HD and Metal Gear Solid collection are also worth picking up, if the price is good. Dead Island and Dead Island Riptde are good games, despite the bugs and sometimes repetative gameplay, the story is great.
You obviously have the hardware issues as well, "Phat" PS3s have very poor heat management and ventilation, resulting in Yellow light of death, can be an easy fix sometimes, reapplying thermal paste and a hoover out can work, other times its a reball and the cost outweights the value of the machine. Go for the more reliable Slims and super slims, all have PS1compatability. Its only the original 40gb launch models that have PS2 on a chip but these are gettng harder and harder to find, and when you do,if fully working, can cost you.
For around £50-80 you can get a decent machine, a couple of pads and a vast collection of games. Keep your eye out for deals on places like Facebook Market Place, they always crop up on my mine.
