Mega Drive Mini

The Mega Drive Mini SEGA has talked about in the past has been revealed, this being in-line with other Mini consoles like the Nintendo ones and not like those million and one plug in consoles that differ in quality.

-September 19th release worldwide

-2 Bundles, one and two six button controllers priced at 6980 yen and 8980 Yen (So roughly £50-£60-ish)

-40 games, one of them being Sonic 2 (And from the sound of it, the only Sonic game as SEGA polled fans to choose from Sonic 1 and 2)

-Has a replica but non-functioning cart slot. ... e-sonic-2/

Probably not my cup of tea as I've seen enough Mega Drive collections and ports in my lifetime but hope it at least goes better for SEGA than the PS1 Mini.

Few more games revealed. Also M2 are handling the emulation, so thats good news. ... _september

When push comes to shove, I would have to admit that the Sega Megadrive is my favourite games console of all time.

This looks like a cute little device, but the plug & play Megadrive thing has been so diluted over the years by Blaze/AtGames that it's hard to summon up much enthusiasm for yet another device, however good it looks.

The emulation will have to be absolutely spot on & it'll have to expand greatly on the games that have been recycled/reissued repackaged so so many times. I love Sonic 2 & Comic Zone but I have more ways of playing these games than there are brexit debates in Westminster.

Also the price...probably north of 50 quid....forget that.

If I was to get one of these, it would have to have a working cartridge port, don't think this one has?

Far more interested in that new FPGA based Sega SG console, it's twice as much as the Mini but pretty authentic to the original hardware. Doesn't run 32X, but you can plug this one into a real Sega CD.

Very mixed feelings about this!

While on the one hand I'm pleased with the release of anything to do with the Mega Drive, to me this seems like you'll be paying for more than you actually get.

Only 20 games?

No more than one game in a series?

What happens when it comes out? Will more games be made available later via download and/or USB?

There probably won't be any of the EA titles on the list either.

The thing I find the most silly is the cartridge slot being there, without actually being able to load cartridges!!

For those of us who have probably already emulated all the Mega Drive games we could ever want, or better yet, still use our original Mega Drives, I see this as being perhaps a nice thing to have, but not really serving any purpose.

But either way I shall keep an eye out for further info...

70 quid for the UK version then, a bit rich for my blood. Good to see Toejam and Earl on there.

Wonder if this will be as easy to hack as the SNES mini is. I already have a boat load of MD games on there, as well as on PS2/3/4 so hard for me to justify getting this.

Oh, it actually has 40 games - I must have the wrong eyes in today!

Well that's a little bit more like it...

I'm already enjoying Mega Drive games on HDMI as the Analog Sg arrived this week. There are so many games that will never get released on the Mini consoles so it's great to be able to use original carts. Also the new controllers are great. There's a great video on My Life In gaming that breaks down all the many options on that thing.

I'll probably not get the Mini depending on the games lineup.

DF Retro has just released a fantastic video of the Analogue Mega SG console here:

A test was done with a custom ROM to check the VDP hardware on the SG. It passed with flying colours, a large number of these tests fail on emulators. As far as the VDP test is concerned, it's a real Mega Drive!

The Mini will just be another one of those ARM-based emulator machines. It should be hopefully a lot better than many of the other clone systems available at the moment, but I'm not sure if I want one yet.

Now, if that full-sized C64 (from the makers of the C64 Mini) gets a release date, I'm gonna pre-order me one of them, no doubt about it!

The more I read about this SG "Hipster Megadrive" thing the better it sounds. If I had loads of spare cash & a pile of MD games I'd be ordering one for sure.

Lol when it appeared in my newsfeed on April 1st I thought it was a joke!

But I do love the mini consoles, and if this is in line with the quality of the Nintendo ones could be good. Mega drive games have unfortunately been overexposed and bastardised on various poor machines over the years which may hinder this. I won't preorder but will keep an eye on and consider it

I was interested until I realized I was reading the games list for the Japanese release.

For the rest of the world it looks like we're mostly getting the same old selection, with only one additional game - Castlevania: Bloodlines - confirmed so far.

I doubt it's going to offer better features than the Steam collection either.

I might be tempted to get one for space if it is any good. Sell off the games that I already own.
