What PC operating system do you use?

A lot of people are using emulation to play console and earlier PC software. I was just wondering what version or versions of Windows people have on their PC’s. Or you may not have Windows atoll!

WinXP. Got Win98SE and DOS running in VirtualPC though.

And I use standard Windows theme instead of the normal XP one.

Ah... erm, two Win2K boxes, a Ubuntu Linux machine and a DOS box for converting C64 disks to D64 files - can't say that in the poll though.

No it's not, you are correct

I ment to add an Others box, but seem to have managed to get it cut off

Well I've got 386 running DOS and Window 3.1
A P2 running Windows 2000, 98 and 95
A P3 running XP and Linux.
Our main P4 PC Running XP, oh and a Sun Spark 10 running Solaris (if that counts!)

So as it stands the list dosn't cover all of my stuff ether ;)

Win XP.

Overall if you are using up to date emulators many of which require Direct X 8 etc then XP is the way to go.

True enough, but a lot of people seem to be having dificulty running older PC/DOS games under emulation.

If you run an older operating system on your PC you don't need the DOSBOX type of emulator, although you may need a 'slowdown' TSR type program. Try running 'The Ancient Art of War' on a modern PC withought slowdown! It actualy runs on most systems, but the screen is just a blurr of movement

And you don't really need the latest stuff to run 90%+ of most emulated systems. There have been perfectly good emulators for everything from a Spectrum through MANE to the PS1 and Dreamcast out for ages, and you can run them perfectly well on most versions of windows!

I have 2 XP machines, 1 Win2K and 1 Win98 system.

All are used for emulation and gaming to some extent, though its primarily the XP boxes.

I just use XP - I'm going to fight the transition to Vista for as long as I can, or until someone tells me that my old games will work on it - it's hard enough getting them to work on XP!

I chose a mixture of the above - but realized that Vista was missing! I have a dual booting PC with XP and Vista.
