Ummmm..

Post by Pacific » Sun Feb 03, 2019 3:29 pm

Hey folks

Have just started building up a small collection of Megadrive games in lieu of the new Analogue ST machine coming out later in the year. Have been looking at Sega's 16-bit games for the first time in 25 years or so on the 'Bay, and have come across a few eye-openers!

This is one of the best so far
I'm not sure where to start with it!

Is this kind of thing the norm now?
Have noticed a fair few games titled as 'repro' (usually a suspiciously low price for something that's rare and going as £40-50 as an original)

On top of this are there still new games coming out for the MD on top of this? (Definitely a nice surprise!)

That particular game is a crap Korean bootleg.

Repros have been knocking around for a while now and eBay seem to be turning a blind eye to them even though they are far from legal.

Homebrews have also been around for a while but the market format them is growing considerably with numerous companies now in operation who solely make new games for old machines and released them in professional packages.

It isn't a crap Korean bootleg. A lot of bootlegs just change a sprite or two, so you end up with something like a Sonic game that is identical to the original, with only the Sonic sprite changed to Mario. This one has pretty much written a whole game that manages a fair approximation of the look and feel of a Mario game. It's not perfect and quite limited, but does what it intended fairly well when compared with most of these sorts of things. An interesting curio imo, though not the best of games for the system.

Like I said, not a crap bootleg.

It isn't a brilliant game, but it is an approximation of a Mario game and an interesting curio if you accept it for what it is.

I might be misremembering but wasn't there a Kickstarter or Indiegogo campaign that was outed for doing this with one of the first party N64 games? I want to say it was a Donkey Kong game but I can't remember the details so I might be mistaken.

I mean I suppose on one level this is fine if you enjoy the reskinned game, but unless it's explicit about what has been done either in the advert or on the packaging it feels a bit underhanded.
