Games with most hours played

Post by Hungry Horace » Tue Feb 14, 2006 10:09 am

I was bored at work yesterday and pondering which games in my history I had spent the most hours on. A few that sprang to mind:

Frontier: Elite 2: Played this solidly for 6 months, albeit not to the exclusion of other titles. In total; it must have been 150 hours+.

Final Fantasy VII: This was released in my final year at university; just what I did not need! 74 hours gone right there!

Baldur's Gate 1 and 2: These epic PC RPGs just seemed to keep going; adding about another 100 hours+ to the tally.

What games did you lot spend the most time on, and (if you can remember), how much, do you think?

Got about 100+ hours on Final Fantasy VII.

Currently weighing in at around 130 hours on Ikaruga. For a game with 5 levels, that's alot.

Final Fantasy VII... let's see... I played it through to completion about 5 or 6 times, and it takes about 26-30 hours if you motor through knowing what you're doing. The first time took me about 70 hours though, and I do have a save somewhere with about 90-something hours on (maxing out the materia)

So, maybe about 300 hours on that

Elite on the Speccy would have been a record-breaker probably. I played it regularly for several years.

I think the undisputed champion would be Phantasy Star Online though. Over the DC and GC versions and the many characters I played I easily clocked up over 1500 hours. And I never got bored of it.

Definitely Ultima Online for me. Played at least 10 hours a week for over 2 years between 1998 and 2000.

Recently the most played game was Knights of the Old Republic on the XBox, or possibly Halo.

Going back to the Spectrum days, it's the usual suspects - Manic Miner, Hunchback, all of Ultimate's titles. Then came Gran Turismo on the PS1, which I put a stupid amount of time into. Nowadays it's stuff like Animal Crossing that's got me racking up the hours.

Pirates! Plenty of time spent on that baby.

Wizardry 8, Final Fantasy VII and X. In fact, most RPGs have stolen my hours. After playing some of these it was such a relief to play through the original Suikoden in about 20 hours - and that was at my usual paranoid pace ("What's over there at the other end of the dungeon? I'd better re-check that village in case I missed something. What happens if I search that cupboard 100 times?")

Football Director on the C64 - but only because it took about 10 minutes to work out the scores from other matches each time.

I've racked up 106 hours on Final Fantasy 10 trying to beat the Dark Aeons and the Monster arena.

Also FF 7,8,9 must have swallowed up a fair few hours when i was in uni.

Easily Team Fortress Classic on PC. Racked up thousands of hours over 5 years playing it in clan-based leagues. Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo comes a relatively close second.

Both of my main contenders are on the 3DO, oddly enough. They are my favourite game of all time, Star Control 2, which I've played all the way through at least eight times, and Starfighter, which unfortunately appealed to my meticulous nature meaning I spent hours and hours on each mission doing everything, even if the mission objectives could be accomplished in ten minutes!
