Your favourite Ben Daglish music

Post by merman » Thu Oct 04, 2018 11:42 am

So with the sad news that Ben Daglish has passed away, I am writing a tribute for the magazine.

I'd like to know which of the following games had your favourite Ben Daglish music. You can select up to THREE options.
And I know I have probably missed out many of YOUR favourites, but the poll is limited to ten options and I wanted to pick a diverse range of titles.
For example, one of my personal favourites is the tune to R1-D1, a game given away on a cover tape with Your Commodore.

The poll will run for a few days, and comments left here and in the other thread will be considered for inclusion in the magazine.

I'll pick just one, Trap, not for the in-game music but for the demo track. Still remains incredibly atmospheric and a perfect fit for the on screen actions, running through several emotions. One of my go to SID tunes.

From this list it's Deflektor, Last Ninja and Auf Wierdersehen Monty.

I knew him more for his Spectrum/ST music than his C64 tunes but I was a big fan nonetheless.

I am actually co-hosting a special episode of the Get To The Choppa podcast on Friday night as tribute to Ben so have spent the whole day listening to his music to pick out my favourites. The podcast will be broadcast live at 9pm and you can find here: https://gettodachoppa.podomatic.com/

Once the recording of the show is online I'll post a link for that too so people can listen at a later date.

As I've said in the other thread ... this is very sad news, he will be sorely missed!

Based on the ones listed above, I've gone for Last Ninja and Firelord. I've always really loved the Firelord theme, it is one of my favs and it's on my c64 playlist. Shout out to one of his lesser know themes from the ST game switchblade.

That's both Last Ninja musicians gone now!

If ST Switchblade had been on the list that would have been my first choice.

His music had such an influence on me. You can probably tell that from my online username.

The Last Ninja by a country mile. But you are missing Kettle AFAIK? That's one funky version!

Sad to hear this news today. RIP Ben.

I don’t think anyone could argue with the brilliantly atmospheric Last Ninja leading the vote here.

I’ll make a quick mention of Dark Fusion, which is a personal favourite of mine, but the game itself wasn’t a great success. Of the listed titles I’d go for Krakout - delightfully silly pieces that perfectly captured the mood of a thoroughly fun game.

Either Last Ninja or Trap (demo)...

But I suppose the Last Ninja is more iconic and I've listened to that more than most C64 tunes over the years. So I'll vote for that!

Only ten options for someone who did the music for over FIFTY games, remember...
But yes, Kettle is funky - but it is primarily based on "Polly Put The Kettle On" (the title tune anyway) so I left it off. I do like it myself, and the great in-game tune.

Deflektor is my favourite among his own, with a great melody and its bouncy-Daglishly feeling.

Cobra is probably my favourite of them all, a fantastic version of the movie music (pretty much the only good thing about the C64 version).

Yeah, the Cobra tune is good.

Submitted my tribute article today, will be in issue 187.
