Jack The Nipper
Rolling Thunder
Golden Axe
Toejam & Earl
Grand Theft Auto (Original 1997 PS1 release)

In and of themselves I rather liked the sequels of these games - Except Jack The Nipper II, which I just never got into - but the originals were certainly better than their sequels.
Same here , esp with GTA (for me PC edition). Fast, frenetic top down action felt like playing with toys when I was a kid. Less said about GTA 2 the better (although London add on pack for GTA was fun). GTA has come a long way from III onwards, but the excitement and fun I found in the original simply wasn't there any more.

Jack the Nipper was a brilliant, fun and innovative game. Jack 2 was an unimaginative platformer. Quite why Gremlin changed the format I do not know.

Jack The Nipper is my favourite Speccy game and most probably my favourite game ever!

Jack The Nipper II was as you say an unimaginative platform game.

At the time I remember just not being able to play it for very long as I was such a Jack The Nipper fan yet Coconut Capers just left me baffled and disappointed.

I actually quite enjoyed GTA 2 in a Steampunk/Chaos Engine sort of way, but not nearly as much as the original.

I would also say that Streets Of Rage and Road Rash were also better games than their sequels.

I can't even begin to comprehend how people can think the original Streets of Rage is a better game than it's sequel

As much as I love the original GTA with it's top-down viewpoint, GTA V is a masterpiece and one of the finest games ever made.

Golden Axe, Toe Jam & Earl and Sega Rally I can get behind though 8)

GTA is great from any perspective, but yea, the more expansive 3D worlds took it to whole new levels, and GTA V was the pinnacle (on par with GTA on Horseback Redemption).

I'll buck the trend though and say in terms of CONSOLE games, I actually preferred Sega Rally 2 on Dreamcast to the Saturn original. Even if SR2 was a bit glitchy as ports go. I just can't quite love Saturn Sega Rally in the same way. Probably a nostalgic choice though as I never had a Saturn when in the 90s, but got a DC and SR2 in its (brief) heyday.

For me, Outrun Coast to Coast is really Sega at it's best. Bright, sunny games with breezy, arcade gameplay and great music. Proper "feel good" games that you can drop into when you're not feeling great about whatever and just let it take you away.

I'd love to see it on XBone Backwards but I expect the Ferrari licencing means that won't happen.

Galaga was a sequel! Galaxian is the original!

I would say Robocop, Outrun, Double Dragon, Tetris and Lemmings.
I think yes to all of these.

A few more I just thought of: Dig Dug, Paperboy and Golden Axe
Yes to all of these again. My god, Paperboy didn't work well when they messed around with it. Dig Dug is old school simplicity, and is better with simple graphics. The graphics have to match the gameplay!

Probably trolling but has the original GranTurismo ever been bettered? Do the sequels offer anything other than more of the same?

GT2 widened the scope of the races, bringing in off road. Not a huge change, but it did give a little variety.

I think Gran Turismo probably peaked around GT3 or GT4, after that, Forza eclipsed that series and just felt a more accomplished racer.

Yes to all, aside from Outrun.

If it weren't for this forum, I'd probably have never have tried (and bought) Outrun 2 and Coast to Coast. Its vastly superior to the original Outrun in almost every way, and I happen to really still like the original (the 3DS M2 port is spectacular!). I can't stress how good Outrun 2 is, and one of the greatest sequels ever made.

Tenchu. The first game was perfect. Great story, felt totally original and it had levels that were just about right in terms of complexity and size. Everything afterwards was disappointing.
I never played the earlier games, but I love Tenchu Z.
