If you like strategy RPGs, definitely look for Ring of Red. A bit like Front Mission, a bit Xenogears, but some great features added to the mix.

King's Field IV
SOS The Final Escape
Evergrace

though the first 2 might be too expensive these days, the first one (for me) is one of the best games I've ever played

To be fair, I had just started my PS2 dabbling

and absolute musts for PS1 : Medal of Honor 1 and 2. FPS's have improved in leaps and bounds but the atmosphere is like no other in the original MoH games.

If you like RPGs, don't forget to give the Phantasy Star Universe titles a look - both of them have a full story mode offline (If you want online play, it'll need to be on PC via the "clementine" servers...)

the fact you saw that game in a charity shop to begin with is amazing in and of itself

around here (Belgium) the last years it's always the same crap (FIFA and Call Of Duty, Tekken), not that I want to say they are bad games (obviously they are not) but I always feel that the more special games are long since gone

RType Final is worth a look. It splits opinion in the shmup community but the sheer audacity of its scope means it's worth a try. There are over 100 ships to unlock and dozens of power up orbs to combine with them. Once you get the Score Attack mode then it's like Gran Turismo for shmups! :)

Sky Odyssey is kind of like Pilotwings for the PS2. It's plane only but you get a nice selection of them. It's a early title so has some fogging but it's a charming game.

Bombastic is the followup to an excellent PS1 game called Devil Dice. Well worth a look if you like puzzle games. Also check out Fantavision and Detonator while you are at it.

Outrun Coast 2 Coast is a magnificent love letter to the classic driving game.

Bishi Bashi Special (PS1) is a hilarious mini game compilation from Konami - it out-weirds WarioWare which is saying something.

Ico and Shadow of the Collosus are 2 iconic PS2 games.

Some other PS1 games if you can find them: Power Diggerz, Kurushi / Kurushi Final and Vib Ribbon

WAY too many great games on this system. Trouble is the oddities tend not to be cheap!
A mixture of odd, exclusive and awesome titles:

Psychonauts
We Love Katamari
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Chaos Bleeds
Global Defence Force
Sky Odyssey
Rogue Trooper
Savage Skies
Transformers (2004) - Best ever Transformers game.
Champions of Norrath
Darkwatch
Party Girls
The X-Files: Resist or Serve
Muppets Party Cruise
Road Trip Adventure
Project Eden
Jaws Unleashed
Go Go Copter
Evil Dead: Regeneration
Runabout 3: Neo Age
Warriors Orochi
Metal Arms: Glitch in the System
Under the Skin
Gregory Horror Show
Everblue
War of the Monsters
Demolition Girl
Splashdown 2: Rides Gone Wild
Battle Engine Aquila
Reel Fishing 3
Naval Ops: Warship Gunner

All worth playing.
Some of them might also be available on Xbox, i didn't check.
No, i'm not angry. That's just how i write.

Try to get a PS2 slim if possible, because most fat models can't play early games (blue CD-based games) and such and the lasers fail easier on them, it's a sign the laser is dying and as the days go they will be harder to find, given (IIRC) the slim was in production for longer. I have SCPH-75003 model (v14) slim.

I don't have many games besides FPS that came with the slim console I own, and I'm not particularly interested in FPS, so I just have been playing Pro Evo 1-5 and GT3/4. Also Hyper SF2.
