Your top 10 8-bit games that are still fun today.

Post by PostieDoc » Fri Jan 12, 2018 7:21 pm

This forum seems to be split into two camps - those who think most 8-bit games are no longer playable and those who think that many still are. I thought it would be interesting to see which games are considered fun to play today.

1. Elite - quite an obvious choice but one I'm sure many would consider.
2. Back To Skool - I have never actually completed this game, I just love getting up to mischief at school.
3. R-Type - a great conversion for the Speccy that still plays really well today.
4. Fire Ant - this came packed in with my Plus/4, I have completed it many times and am happy to keep on completing it.
5. Spy Vs Spy - if you have someone else to play with, this game never gets old.
6. Target: Renegade - a great fighting game especially in two player mode.
7. Head Over Heels - one of the greatest games of all time.
8. Mercenary - there aren't many dedicated Plus/4 games but this shows what it was capable of in the right hands. Love exploring at my own pace.
9. Batty - my favourite Breakout type of game.
10. Turbo Esprit - GTA before there even was GTA, tremendous game.

Just one question, why chose Monty on the Run on CPC over the C64 version with that amazing music? You are obviously a big CPC fan (and a C64 fan too) by the look of that list! Or am I missing something and the CPC version has amazing music too? :?

Games that I personally still find really playable (more so than most modern games as I want to go back and play them, unlike newer games that just seem more disposable)...

1. Wizball - C64
2. Manic Miner - Speccy/C64/whatever else it came out on
3. H.E.R.O - C64 (and loads of other 8-bit)
4. Head Over Heals - C64
5. Boulderdash - C64
6. Hunters Moon - C64
7. IK+ - C64
8. Samurai Warrior: The Battles of Usagi Yojimbo - C64
9. Paradroid - C64
10. Last Ninja 2 - C64

I know Head Over Heals was probably faster on Speccy/CPC, but I never got to play those versions - so C64 it is.

1. Bubble Bobble (C64 / Amiga) : still good fun, always will be.
2. Beyond Castle Wolfenstein (Apple II) : that wicked speech creates such tension
3. David's Midnight Magic (Apple II / C64) : no other pinball like it.
4. Wonderboy (C64) : marvellous playability
5. Salamander (C64) : Such a brilliantly designed shoot em up
6. IK+ (C64) : still can have you gripped for a solid half hour
7. Chase HQ (Spectrum)
8. Super Mario II or III or whatever (NES) : cant go wrong really
9. World Class Leaderboard (C64) : still good fer 9 holes
10. One on One basketball (C64)

Yep, Monty On The Run on the CPC had cracking music, and as a CPC owner (my best mate had the C64), I heard it more often, so preferred it at the time. Plus the graphics were more vivid and less muddy.

BTW don't listen to it on YouTube - the sound is wrong. It has to be on a real CPC.
[EDIT] Quote went slightly wrong.

Spectrum choices for me as that will always be my bias - I'm sure the other formats may have better versions / music etc but hey , its my choice.

1. Midnight Resistance.
2. Chase H.Q.
3. Chaos.
4. Micronaut 1.
5. Batty. (Arkanoid 2 is good but Batty is better)
6. Talisman. (Crash powertape game)
7. R-Type
8. Rainbow Islands.
9. Hero Quest / Space Crusade
10. Batman (3d)

Emulated on the right machine they still retain the playability they always had . Suppose if you can still ignore the not great graphics , like we had to back in the day , then the games will hold whatever attention you had.

I would have to have a really good think about this, IMO there's an incredible amount of good playable fun games right back to two player pong that are still tremendous fun to play. The arcade type play lends itself to it.

This is a strange one. I loved Elite at the time and played it for many hours on the Spectrum. Everything about it seemed amazing at the time; the box, the poster, the manual. And the Spectrum version was a pretty good conversion too!

However these days I would only load up Elite for pure nostalgia purposes. By today's standards, I find it no fun to play at all! It will always be an important part of gaming history and a classic, but I just cannot play it these days.

Anyway, my top ten 8-bit games, that I still play fairly regularly - which I still find enjoyable and very playable today, are...

1. Chuckie Egg (Spectrum)
2. Jetpac (Spectrum)
3. Turmoil (Spectrum)
4. Dropzone (C64 / Atari XL)
5. Cookie (Spectrum)
6. Pssst (Spectrum)
7. Eric and the Floaters (Spectrum)
8. Zynaps (Spectrum)
9. Manic Miner (Spectrum)
10. Wheelie (Spectrum)

All C64...

WOTEF
Impossible Mission
Rambo
Suspended
Mayhem in Monsterland
Ikari Warriors
Maniac Mansion
Bruce Lee
Ghosts n Goblins
Raid Over Moscow

Do any arcade games from the 80s qualify as "8 bit"? A lot of Arcade games from the 80s at least hold up very well.

I suppose my really very early experiences were with the 8 bit C64, before we went on the the 16 bit Amiga (but I did occasionally play a bit of Game Gear and Master System....even more rarely NES.) Therefore I'm struggling a bit with putting together 10...I definitely could still enjoy Dragon Crystal on the Game Gear though!
