Update! Update! Final stages of proofreading have now been entered. I've just completed a massive overhaul of all the background images, improving definition, colour balance and even moving parts of them around to ensure they fit the pages more comfortably. Here's an example of what I mean:

Here's the original loading screen:

droidsloadingscreen.png

Previously, the background was just a stretched version of this image, which meant that it looked quite blurry, although it wasn't immediately obvious due to the opacity. Said opacity was set at 19%, which was a little too high on some pages, making the text more of a strain to read than it should be; I've now reduced that to 13% throughout, which looks much better. In this case, and many others throughout the book, the original loading screen fit the page fairly naturally, but there were areas of text that made the page look needlessly cluttered, so I've now removed these entirely, here and wherever else it felt necessary. Also, as you can see, the green droid being blasted by R2 in the original image was much further to the right, which meant that he was almost completely obscured by the screen shots, but now that I've moved him left a bit, it all looks much better. I've done something similar for pretty much every page, as well as completing all the initial proofreading for all 290+ game pages - it's taken a full three weeks and around 10+ hours of scrutiny and adjustment every day, which is why you haven't heard much from me for a little while!

So, everything is almost ready now. The third-party proofreading is also well underway and looks set to be all done, on schedule, by December 10. Starting around a week from now, I'll be ramping up the marketing in the hope of getting a healthy number of preorders confirmed. The All Time Heroes list (names of anyone who preorders before December 10 to be printed in the book) is still looking like a very elite group, but now that the book is only around three weeks from going to the printers and I'll now have more time to generate some interest, hopefully the number of names on the list will increase. It looks as though my original prediction of around 300 preorders was wildly optimistic, but 100 should be just about achievable with a good wind, so that's my target now. I'm also all but certain that the print run will now be 250 copies only, with future reprints quite unlikely, so if you're pondering getting on board, don't wait too long, as when all 250 books have gone, that'll almost certainly be that!

Just to confirm, The Book of the Game of the Film is a 300-page, full-colour hardcover, around 150,000 words in length and packed with cover images and screen shots. The book costs £24.99 plus p&p, which is £3.90 in the UK for 2nd-class recorded delivery. Payment can be made via PayPal Friends & Family to jerellis1@yahoo.com - if you'd prefer to pay via PayPal Goods & Services, that's fine, but there's a small additional charge to cover PayPal fees. Cheques are also fine - PM me or check the Golem Books Facebook page for details. Can't wait until it's finally out there - not far away now!

Totally looking forward to this! Unluckily shipping costs to mainland EU look steep

The Book of the Game of the Film is now only around a fortnight from going to print. Proofreading and finishing touches are all but complete - here's the contents page, which I've just finished putting together:

Index pages are almost done too - I'll post them here soon. The final task before sending off the finished PDFs to the printers will be to compile the All Time Heroes list (to be printed inside the book), your place on which can be secured by confirming your preorder by December 10. £24.99 plus p&p gets you a 300-page, full-colour, 150,000-word hardcover epic. That's roughly the same price as a pair of cinema tickets! Payment can be made by PayPal Friends & Family to jerellis1@yahoo.com - please see the Golem Books Facebook page for further info.

In all seriousness, if I wasn't the author, I'd be buying a copy! ;)

There's an outside chance it'll be ready for delivery before Christmas, but it's touch and go - it all depends on how quickly the printers can get everything done once the PDFs have been sent over just after December 10, but even then, I'm pretty sure I'll want to factor in some time to make last-minute revisions and so on, which means an early-January dispatch is probably much more likely.

If it's something for your Christmas stocking you're in need of though, how about The 8-Bit Book - 1981 to 199x?

Last call for All Time Heroes! The PDFs are heading for the printers this week so if you want your name to appear inside the book, today's realistically your last chance to confirm your preorder in time. You'll also be getting around 150,000 words of full-colour, hard-covered, dust-jacketed 8-bit computer gaming goodness for a mere £24.99 plus p&p (£3.90 in the UK for 2nd-class recorded delivery) so it'll be well worth your while. Payments can be made to jerellis1@yahoo.com via PayPal Friends & Family - drop me a line if you need any further info!  :)

Didn't have any luck sourcing a better post cost for overseas? I understand unless you're a big corporate with massive bulk deals this is pretty tough. :)

Not yet, sadly, although now that I have a sample of the book in hand (see below!) I can gauge the weight more accurately, and it looks like the cost of worldwide postage (i.e. outside Europe) will be closer to £18 than £20 as I’d first thought. Admittedly only a small saving, but it’s something I guess. :)

Just a few minor tweaks required and we’ll be good to go. Looking very pretty already though, and it’s satisfyingly hefty too (see comparison shot with The 8-Bit Book below - the new one is more than twice as heavy!) There are fewer than 200 left now, for anyone considering ordering a copy - check out the Golem Books website for further details: https://jerellis1.wixsite.com/golembooks :)
