monthly retro gaming quiz

Post by Mr_Horizon » Sat Sep 30, 2017 9:09 pm

hello everyone,

I'd like to test your gaming knowledge, and have prepared a series of monthly riddles. I've been doing this for a while in various english & german online communities (over 10 by now!), and would love to include retrogamer if there is interest. Please know there is no financial or marketing motivation in this, I'm just doing it for fun.

The riddles can be about finding all eight games used in a fake screenshot:

...or about guessing the right games from 25 cutouts:

There's even a sound FX quiz once or twice a year, you can take a look at all of them here: http://www.retrogamequiz.com/

I'm confident there's lots of gaming geeks here that will score well on any of these. :)

Feedback is welcome, the quiz for October is about to start... if no one shouts STOP I'm going to post it here in a few hours!

Oktober Quiz - Sound FX #2

bleep bleep bloop... it's time for another round of sound FX from the world of video games. A few months ago I did this for the first time, and received a lot of positive feedback. So it was clear I'd eventually do it again. :)

Warning - this riddle is especially difficult... again. Even if you only recognise two or three titles, just participate regardless. Keep in mind it will be like that for all players, even the winners had lots of gaps last time.

As I can't post sound effects in this Forum (the picture at the bottom is just a dummy), I have outsourced the quiz.

Here is the quiz: www.retrogamequiz.com

Participate via this google doc: www.nerdquiz.de

Deadline is Tuesday, October 31st... have fun! :)

October quiz - hints #1

Alright folks, time to go home - every title has already been found out. Every single one, really!

Oh, and does anybody have full points? Not even close! :)

No one is even close to the 20-points-mark, and the average score (21 people so far) is clearly below ten. Great chance to get into a top 10 position, everybody!

Let me help you a little, here are a few clues...

1) No games from the first sound quiz (click "back" on the quiz page) are repeated in this one.

2) Two sounds in this riddle are not from games, but from a console itself.

4) Title number 6 is a noise from the antagonists of a science fiction series.

5) Sound 15 is a C64 game, the speech sample shows two of the just 15 digitised words in the game.

6) The 17 is the level up sound of a famous fantasy game.

7) The games 4, 9, 13, 19 und 24 are first person shooters.

Had a go at the latest one. Thought I was doing ok for the first few then bam! Barely even scratched ten in all honesty!

October quiz - hints #2

Half time... now we are over thirty people, but there's no one who got everything figured out, and the average score is still below 10...

Did I mention the top 10 start at 11 points??

@RetroMartin: The sound riddles are superhard, no doubt. Next month there's going to be something easier. :)

@kiwimike: Thank you! Go ahead and try your luck... or wait for an easier quiz.

-------

Let me help a little, here is the 2nd set of clues:

1) Nr.3 is the from the first release of a playstation jump'n'run series.

2) Game 12 is a lightgun shooter.

3) The sound #20 is a game over screen.

4) Number 21 is a puzzle platformer.

5) Number 22 is a racing game.

October Quiz - Clues #3

Watch out, you've got only three days left! There's forty participants now, but the average score is still below 10.

Therefore... here are the very last clues from me:

1) Game 14 is a sports game from the 90s.

2) For number 8 I originally uploaded a different sound, and only changed on October 1st... this one: http://retrogamequiz.com/08a.mp3

3) Hey, the same for number 9! ;) http://retrogamequiz.com/09a.mp3

4) Sound 11 is a speaker message from a totalitarian regime.

5) And at last... the jingle of game 10 (an old platformer) is played at the start of each level.

That's it - now you're on your own. Good luck, you've got time until Tuesday.

I'd guessed a few of these, but didn't fill the form. Surprised at how low some of the scores are for very popular and to me obvious sounds, like Sinistar and Speedball 2.

Also surprised at how many non-retro games are in a quiz labelled as retro. That threw me a bit.

November Quiz - Retro Pixel

So, it's time for a more pixelated quiz... this time you have to guess some twentyfive 2D games, mostly classics - but you only have the zoomed-in faces of the main protagonists to work with.

I hope that's to your liking - the poll in the last round showed a clear win for this type of quiz. :)

I wish you luck - and don't forget: the correct answer is the name of the game, not the character.

Deadline is Thursday the 30th of November, please participate via http://www.nerdquiz.de/

here is the quiz... have fun! :)

@dste: glad to hear - you got 18 days left, and there will be some hints next week. Good luck!

@Antiriad2097: It'll always be a mix of old and new - I hope the current quiz is more to your liking, almost all of them are retro 2D titles. :)

I haven't actually played Sinistar (never heard of it) or Speedball 2 (seen it, know about t, just never played)

I have tried the latest quiz, first line was easy then it got patchy and I couldn't do line 3 or 4 at all! Got a couple towards the end so if I've got them all I should have about 9 points.

Edit - bollucks I've realised what 24 is, can I get a bonus point? :P

Hey, you can easily update your submission many times - Just enter username, forum and all additional titles you just found out, leaving everything else blank.

Once the deadline passes, all entries with the same username/forum combo will be joined!

So no need for fancy points, just update your answers with what you think #24 is. :)
