Sonic the hedgehog - MASTER SYSTEM
Is this the most underrated retro gamer ever?
Obviously the Megadrive version is superior in pretty much every way, but this is still a really good game, would love to see it get some more loving in the form of a HD remake.

Its not underrated in anyway, dont think ive ever really seen that much hate for it (besides Nintendo fanboys)
Most people that play it expecting it to be a downscaled Sonic MD usually hate it as it was never really meant to be Sonic MD, its a different style of platformer as the MS couldn't really do BLAST PROCESSING so instead it became less of a GOTTA GO FAST platformer and more of a methodical style one
Comparing the two isnt really fair

Yes like Prinny said, they are oranges and apples in comparison to each other. I always preferred the sega master-system version though the megadrive game did grow on me over the years. I used to hate it as I played Sonic 2 before it. Its hard to appreciate sonic 1 on megadrive as it does not have the spin-dash move which means you have to take run-ups all the time to gain speed. But get over this and the megadrive game is as good as the sega master system game. The master system game has some great secrets and looks absolutely gorgeous for its time.
Re: Sonic the hedgehog - MASTER SYSTEM
Think the problem is most people who's played the game have played the Game Gear version on a TV through Sonic Compilations, which the SMS version is far better suited for TVs (For one thing, you'll have more then enough time to react from oncoming enemies.
), and thus base their judgement on the GG version.
I agree, the SMS version is overlook in question. I just don't understand why SEGA keeps putting out the GG version when there's a better version for TVs and PC. Heck, even the Wii Virtual Console got the SMS version....

Love this game, but I think it's had a decent amount of love at least from this side of the pond.

I played it before the Megadrive one back in the day. Thought it was MUCH harder but a damn good game. The hidden 8 bit marble garden music hidden in the files is also excellent.

I actually prefer the Master System version over the Mega Drive. The second game however, is infuriating

Ooh! Will have to have a look for that, awesome!
Thanks for the response all, good to see others also like the game.

Its harder because when you get hit you cant recollect rings
Also none on boss stages
Also for true ending you have to FIND the Choas emeralds, they are hidden in the levels

Re: Sonic the hedgehog - MASTER SYSTEM
Great thread so far
I adore the Master System version of Sonic the Hedgehog! I much prefer the Special Stages which are more of a bonus than a challenge (as well as the fact the Chaos Emeralds are hidden in areas of each level), Bridge makes a much better second level than Marble, and Labyrinth isn't so painful - at least in my opinion! The music is top class as you'd expect from Yuzo Koshiro, and my favourite song in the game is probably the Scrap Brain theme also used in Sky Base act 1.

Yeah, Marble Zone is always a bit of a bore I find.
As for the Marble Zone music, that is awesome though! Nice to hear a Master System version of it.

The Master System version of the song actually sounds a little better to me than the original, indeed it is awesome
