So, tell me about the original Nintendo Wii......

Post by David » Wed May 17, 2017 10:53 am

I have never been interested in this console since it was released. Never even had a shot of one.

However, feeling rather nintendo-y recently and was looking at buyING a snes, n64 or game cube again but passing a cash generator that had one for sale for 9.99 I decided to see what all the fuss is about as this will enable me to play all these consoles in one.

Been working so not had a go on it yet but have sorted a memory card out with a load of emulators and stuff to put on it. Got a classic controller and game cube controller with it but no games as they were all crap.

Going to get the mario games ordered online, what else is recommended?

Cheers

Resident Evil 4, brilliant fun using the wii remote to aim your guns - honestly worth it for that alone IMO

Mad World. Stylish violence, there's a lot of fun to be had here in small doses. Pretty much an arena fighter, so your mileage may vary depending whether you like that genre, but you should at least try it since there's not much else to match it on any system imo.

I too was a latecomer to the Wii, only got one last year. I felt overall it was.... too gimmicky. But this is mainly for games like sports games that relied on the Wiimote, which is what I really wanted it for. Apart from ping pong, which doesn't play too badly, everything else was really disappointing. It picks up on general direction but you can flay all you like in the air, its not going to make much difference and so for things like tennis and golf which are my favourite kinds of sporting video games, it falls flat. It's great for kids to play with but that's about it.

Having said that, Resident Evil 4 worked well with the wiimote, even though I still prefer using the joystick for that game but it gives it a different feel, a different experience, so that's definitely worth checking out. Something interesting I found was, Mario Party I found more playable and fun on PC emulator with joystick! In other words, I am not a big fan at all of the Wiimote, I hate it really to be honest. But that's just my opinion. :D

Lots of fun "on rails" shooters like House of the Dead 2/3 & Overkill, Resident Evil Darkside & Umbrella Chronicles.

Also for the Hell of it, Mad Dog McCree.

On the gun shooters, its worth picking up one of the pistol grips to put the wiimote in. The good ones will have a decent trigger on them so you can play more naturally

I've also avoided the Wii, mainly because of the "gimmicky" motion controls and the fact it was basically a "overclocked GameCube", but it does have some nice games for it, mainly Nintendo's own titles like the Mario Galaxy games but also some 3rd party niche Japanese games. I think nowadays, it would be best to play those games on a PC emulator in high resolutions and standard gamepad support if you have a good enough PC, but I guess 2nd hand systems don't cost much and would be appealing to those who still have a CRT TV screen (I have one but don't really use it much) and maybe as a "light" emulation system for the pre-3D systems.

Ghost Squad, as shinobi said, this is an excellent lightgun game that has loads and loads of secrets and unlockables to find.

Plus many many games use standard controls, and games like Resident Evil 4 actually use the wiimote to add to the experience.

Thankfully most of the games I want can be played with the cube controller

Just set up the snes emulator before work there. Wow I love it full screen and looks great even on hdtv
