Poor sequels

Post by Darran@Retro Gamer » Wed Apr 05, 2017 5:28 am

So I've just been playing Chuckie Egg II for a retro revival and one of the things that strikes me about it is just how poor it is compared to the masterful original.

With that in mind we're going to create a feature based on terrible sequels for a later issue of the magazine.

I'm sure there are loads of examples, but at the moment I'm thinking.

Chuckie Egg 2

Renegade III: The Final Chapter

Castlevania: Dracula's Kiss

Zelda II

Devil May Cry 2

Dan Dare 2

Cyber Shinobi

Dino Crisis 3

And so on…

Here's some that spring to mind (some of these are more disappointing rather than poor though)

Strider II
Blue Lightning II (Jaguar CD)
Checkered Flag II (Jaguar)
Robocop II
Chase HQ II (Home ports)
Turbo OutRun
Streets of Rage III
3D Sonic games after Sonic Adventure
Kick Off 3
Double Dragon III
Double Dragon V
Donkey Kong III
Super Monaco GP 2
Spy Hunter 2
Driver 3

I always thought Zelda II was a good game. just not what fans expected, but taken on its own I always thought it was great.

For me the worst were 3 modern updates of classic games.

Final fight Streetwise
Altered Beast
Golden axe.

I also thought Zelda 2 was good.
I don't think it was disappointing at the time of release. After the release of A Link to the Past and Link's Awakening the Zelda formula was set and poor old Adventure of Link was seen as the black sheep.

I was disappointed by Rebel Strike: Rogue Squadron III
I'd been completely blown away by Rogue Leader and then in this installment they decided to add those awful on-foot sections. Ugh!

It's worth remembering that all lists are subjective so we won't all agree :)
The general concensus is that it's one of the weakest games in the franchise.
It might not even make our final list, but it's one that stuck in my mind when I started playing Chuckie Egg II :)

I suppose there are two ways of looking at things too. What disappointed at the time an what is disappointing now, retrospectively.

There are probably loads of games that people were disappointed with initially upon release (because they were too different or something) which have since become classics.

While concurring with others, I would add:

Agent X II
Starglider II
Fist II
Barbarian II
Turok Evolution
Resident Evil 6
Top Gear Rally 2

More very disappointed by some of those though, rather than them being out right awful

I'd think that the worst sequels are the ones that are announced but, for one reason or another, never happen. After all, what actual game could be as much of a crushing disappointment as no game at all; and now that we're living in the era of pre-orders and crowdfunding, it's even just as possible to waste your money on them as the ones that came out and turned out to be crap.

I'd say that Chuckie Egg 2 is a decent game though; it's just not really a sequel to the original in any way but the name. Rather, it's what you get when a publisher wants to cash in on their biggest hit, but the developer has moved on so someone else has to write it, and they're wanting to jump on the Jet Set Willy bandwagon instead of building on the strengths of the first game. At least, how the game came to be makes a lot more sense to me now than it did back in the day.

As for Zelda 2 and Dan Dare 2, I'd contend that they're both quite decent too. They're just very difficult right from the beginning, and that limits their appeal in comparison to games that were a heck of a lot easier to work you way into.

There can't be the same 'general concensus' with Chuckie Egg 2?
I always thought it was a decent game, completely different to the first in the same way that Jet Set Willy was to Manic Miner.

I had a quick look and found Crash scored it higher than the first game. :?

Just to be clear, I prefer the first Chuckie Egg but 2 is not a poor sequel.

Anyway.....

Dino Crisis 2 (PS1)
Bombjack 2 (Arcade)
Cauldron 2 (ZX Spectrum)
Mr Do's Castle (Arcade)

I also really liked Zelda II. Its different from the other games in the series but still a great game in its own right (I loved the fast paced combat).

Sequels I disliked/hated:
Return of Strider (The US Gold Strider sequel, its bloody awful)
Mega Man Battle Network 4 (The terrible slow pace and shift in graphics killed my enjoyment of the game, never finished it yet)
Dead Space 2 (its got the atmosphere down perfectly, and the weapons rocks but combat was hampered by huge hoards of enemies and no dodge button. Ended up hating it in the end)
Devil May Cry 2 (pathetically easy with almost no AI in enemies unless you play it on DMD difficulty...)

Super Mario bros 2 (western) - Because lets face it. It wasn't the sequel people wanted.
Sonic 3D: Flickies Island - A massive comedown after Sonic 3 and Knuckles
Devil May Cry 2 - Because mutant helicopters.
Sonic '06 - Technically not a sequel as it is a reboot but 'kin hell.
I write for...
