Best Williams Arcade Game?

Post by The Laird » Fri Mar 31, 2017 5:48 am

It's poll time! Just for a bit of fun 8)

Williams Electronics weren't a particularly prolific producer of arcade video games, but the vast majority games they did release were absolute classics.

But which one is your favourite and why?

I think I'd have to go with Joust. We had a cab at our local arcade, it looked good (both the physical cab and the game itself), played well, and I didn't feel robbed of my 10p after a game like I did with Defender or Robotron. I don't play it a lot, but I do really like it, since there's not much else similar visually or in gameplay terms.

Robotron is probably a better game and I can deal with it better these days thanks to being able to practice without laying out cash, but it doesn't have the unique feel of Joust. Twin stick arena shooters are pretty common, so it takes the shine off it a little.

Can I also throw 1942 in there? Not the best game in the series, not even the best series of shmups, but I do have a distinct fondness for it. I don't care if everyone thinks the C64 version was pants, I liked it even though my freeze framed copy took a good 20 minutes to load.

I've got a lot of love for their Phantom Menace pinball table too, that novel (fragile and expensive) glass for the video projections on the back really make it stand out from the crowd. Shame it wasn't for a better movie, but it does add something to the game that appeals to the videogamer, being able to 'shoot' moving targets with the ball, integrating the video in a way that hasn't been done elsewhere.

I didn't put that because it's a Capcom game, Williams just distributed it in North America (a bit like Moon Patrol, which was Irem's game originally)

I've gone with Robotron but it really could have been any of the first three.

The others are pretty good too, just nowhere near as original or influential.

So many great games and an iconic company.

Hard to choose. Will have to have a think.

NB: Sinistar. not Sinister.

I like the play on words on that title, though it's a game I've not really gotten to grips with.

Robotron: 2048 for me, although Defender comes a very close second.

Not familiar with many of these games at the time, and first got Smash TV on the SNES, and absolutely adored it. Having played most of these since (through various retro compilations etc), it still remains the highlight for me, although its inspirational predecessor Robotron is also awesome.

Ah yeah, I didn't spot that, it probably auto-corrected it.

I voted for Smash TV. I first played it in an arcade on Margate seafront in the early 1990s. I do remember a lot of the magazines were raving about it at the time. I know that you could say Robotron was first, but it was first the first twin joysticks shooter that I played - so there.

I'll give a special mention to Defender - as I think that's kind of unique. That did inspire other types of games like Dropzone on the home formats.

If you look back through the Desert Island Disks features in Retro Gamer, so many of the gaming legends choose Robotron to take with them. That's as good a reason as any to vote for it.

The Defender controls sucks donkey appendages. Archer showed how little it takes to fix them...
So Robotron of course!

I voted for Robotron 2084, I still play the heck out of the superb Atari Lynx version.

My second choice would have been Stargate. I got the incredible 2600 version with my console for Christmas and it's still one of my favourite games on that console.

I do also have a lot of good memories of playing Joust with my brother and still play both NARC and Smash T.V. from time to time too.

I'll be boring & say Robotron, in terms of its playability, impact & legacy it takes some beating.

Twin stick shooters still rule, even after a billion incarnations.
