One Issue Magazine - Did I dream it?

Post by Rockford » Fri Feb 10, 2017 8:26 am

The memory is now vague...

Late 80's or early 90's I went into WH Smith.
There, on the shelves was the first issue of a new multi-format magazine, by a publisher I had not heard of.
It was cheap in price, even for the time, maybe £1.49.
It had a glossy cover and was about 100 pages, with most reviews taking up half a page.
I liked the format, so sent off the Sub coupon with a cheque (for £13 or £14 I think).
But the cheque was never cashed, and Issue 2 afaik never came out.

Anyone know what it was?
(No, it wasn't Future's 99p Videogamer mag).

I can think of a couple of multi format magazines that didn't last very long at all, but not just one issue only.

I remember a first issue of a multi format magazine & the cover featured the character select screen from around that time fitting your description .. Never saw it again after the first issue

Are you thinking of VGS: Videogames Shopper? It was mid-90s and the first issue was tiny, but it only lasted 2 or possibly 3 issues and was cheap (£1.75, I think)

Alternatively, I could imagine it being a semi-professional fanzine. I've read that Electric Brain was distributed in some UK shops. I was also amazed to spot a dedicated Atari Lynx mag in one newsagent in the early 90s and thought I'd imagined it for years, only to discover a few years ago that it was the final issue of Lynx User fanzine.

Edit: Bad Influence mag only lasted two issues, if I recall correctly.

Edit 2: I vaguely recall seeing Fistful magazine seeing in the early 90s. I can't find a photo, but it's listed on Magazines from the Past.

Thank you Knight_Beat. VGS: Videogames Shopper it was.
I can sleep again now.

My memory of it was slightly different to how it actually was, and
I'm sure I searched high and low for Issue 2 (maybe my local Smiths didn't stock it).

Nice work there, never heard of it. Bad Influence magazine I knew didn't last long (and was one of my thoughts), but only two issues? Wow.
