Best vehicles in games

Post by pratty » Sat Jan 21, 2017 2:53 pm

So what are your favourite vehicles from games? Mention as many as you like.

They can be cars, bikes, trains, boats, planes, space ships etc, they can even be a character themselves. They can be from racing games, sandbox games, platform games, adventure games etc, it doesn't have to be playable, the vehicle itself could be a level or area of a game. They just have to have originated from the game rather than real life or another medium, so Ferraris or Batmobiles wouldn't count.

They might be your favourite because they were fun to use, or they looked cool, or you'd like to own one in real life, or are just iconic.

To be honest I'm struggling to think of any that stand out to me as a favourite but i thought it might be an interesting topic for everyone. Maybe some of you will give me some ideas.

hmm.. lets see.

I really loved the cars in Mafia - the original Mafia. I just loved the feel of the driving, it felt more substantial than those in GTA III at the time, and I just really liked that mix of realism and arcade, the feel that they achieved.

The tanks in Battlefield 1942. The jeeps were super fun too but just the power and feel of those tanks, just brilliant.

Outrun (arcade). Although they tried hard in Chase HQ, nothing for me comes close to the original Ferrari in Outrun. Looks and feels perfect.

And Dirt 2 and Dirt 3. For a pure arcade driving experience, the best there is in my opinion.

The buggy in Buggy Boy for the C64.
Driving on two wheels, flying through the air... Oh, and a little bug where if you crash into the water right at the end of one go the next game starts with the buggy still blue instead of the usual red...

HALO's Warthog is a lot of fun to drive, and also to man the gun turret while a second player drives.
Also loved the Desert Fox from XBox Crimson Skies - fast and manoeverable with neat weapons.

It's a pity the OP states the vehicles have to originate from within a game because the tanks and light cycles in Tron still haven't been beaten for minimalist cool.

Far away from any sort of cool but still brilliant nonetheless are any of the wobbly, ungainly and barely functional vehicles you build yourself to complete a task in Banjo Kazooie: Nuts n Bolts. They may not have the grace of a well designed sports car or fighter jet but the immense satisfaction from seeing your ad hoc jalopy eyesores somehow delivering a Jiggy against impossible design odds makes them the best vehicles in any game.

After that there's only the comedy gold of the kid's tricycle in Dead Rising 2 that's worth a mention.
If it's slower than me, dumber than me and it tastes good ... tough titty.

- Banshee (Halo)
- Sabre Turbo (GTA series)
- That ridiculously quick but equally ridiculously fragile rocket car thing from Simpsons Hit & Run.
- Skyline GT-R R34 Nur (Enthusia Professional Racing)
- Ferrari F50 (Outrun 2006 C2C)
- those UFO things from the final boss battle in Spyro 3: Year of the Dragon
Retro is a state of mind, and cares not for your puny concepts like dates and calendars.

Nuts and Bolts is a great game.

Unfairly hated on because it was not the traditional Banjo 3 everyone wanted.

Another example of why I laugh when I hear people complaining that developers won't try different things and take risks. Developers stick with the same old thing because if they do try something different, those same gamers then cry that its not like the old games that they want.

What are those mechs called in Halo? Mantis? They're a lot of fun
Yoshi, love the idea of just eating anything in your way
Space Harrier - don't mind me, I'm just holding on to a rocket for dear life, nothing to see here

How about the Cobra Mk III from Elite?

That said, if you're playing Frontier or Elite: Dangerous, I'd say that the Asp Explorer is a better all-round ship.

My Peugeot 106 in NFS Underground 2 - must have been galling for my rivals to see a fairly unassuming hatchback blast past them at 220mph.
