Best Star Wars game?

Post by outdated_gamer » Sun Jul 31, 2016 12:25 pm

There's a lot of SW games, but which one(s) did you like the most? Personally, I don't consider myself a SW-enthusiast, but I like the setting and lore of it.

From what I've played, I liked Jedi Outcast and Star Wars: Racer, but I never got into KOTOR and just tried out the flight games (e.g. Rogue Squadron and X-Wing series).

Also, to make the thread more vaired, here's another question - tell your fave Star Trek game too if you got one.

For me you cant beat sitting in the cockpit of an original star wars arcade cab.

The "super star wars" trilogy on the snes hold fond memories for me too.

I also really liked battlefront 2 and the force unleashed 1&2 which dont always get the praise they deserve.

As for star trek anything to do with it is complete censored.

I shall dispute that. Star Trek 25th Anniversary and its sequel Judgement Rights were both excellent. As was Voyager: Elite Force.

As for Star Wars.. got to be the X-Wing series.

Birth of the Federation is one of my all time favourite games - I wish GOG would get that up and running!

Star Wars KOTOR without a doubt. Loved it.

Star Trek has a lot of average games that are still worth a play.

I loved Elite Force and I enjoyed Away Team more than I thought I would. Also before I forget Klingon Honor Guard was pretty enjoyable.

Oh and let's not forget the awesome next generation pinball machine :D

After reading the thread title the first game that came to mind was Super Star Wars on the SNES. However after having a think, it would Tie Fighter on the PC.

I liked all the games in the X-Wing series, but as they grew in complexity, they became more like flight simulators in space (X-Wing Alliance I'm looking at you) Tie Fighter just nailed it. A perfect balance. Plus there's the additional thrill of being the bad guys for a change.

As for Star Trek, I'm a fan of the films...........but that's about it. Hence my Trek game experience is quite limited. However I loved Elite Force and would love to give the 25th Anniversary a try at some point.

Even though its long been surpassed in every way, I have a lot of nostalgia for Dark Forces on the PC. I was pleased to get that in a Steam bundle again recently. At the time, it was amazing to play what felt like Doom in a star wars environment.

I also loved the original Super Star Wars game on the SNES, but never played the sequels. I also used to look in envy at Shadows of the Empire on the N64 when I "only" had a Playstation - even if probably the only truly impressive level was Battle of Hoth (never got that game in the end, as there were too many other N64 priorities by the time I got the console!). I did get a Gamecube in part because of Rogue Squadron 2 though - another atmospheric Star Wars game that raised the bar, and still looks pretty good today.

Rogue Leader - Gamecube. Finally, a realistic space setting!

Also greatly enjoyed Star Wars on the NES. Completing that is still one of my greatest personal achievements. Pretty sure it had to be played all the way through in one sitting?

Also enjoyed ROTJ on the Speccy.

Star Trek? There was a Voyager game on the PC circa 1998 I liked?

Aye, you did. I remember enjoying it back in the day. Especially the floating bits on the death star. It was loads of fun when you knew what you were doing.

I'll go for X-Wing, which I think deserves more love. Tie Fighter is good too, but it's mostly just more of the same with incremental improvements and the missions just don't seem as memorable to me.

In terms of Star Trek games, I'd agree that there haven't been a lot of good ones. If anything I'd go back to the original text-only BASIC game from the 70s, as that's quite good fun to play and I've spent a fair amount of time over the years playing its variants and porting it to new systems. I believe David Ahl got permission from Paramount Pictures when he published it in a book too, so it can even be counted as an official game of sorts; although that was from way before the era of licensing deals, so I'm not sure it constitutes a watertight legal agreement.
