Three weeks in paradise advert. WTF?!

Post by Gigifusc » Sat Jul 16, 2016 3:20 am

Never realised this before.

So I was taken aback by the racial stereotypes being used. It's pretty bad actually but I guess it was acceptable back then. But upon closer inspection, I realised that in the centre of the picture is a local pulling down the swimming trunks of a woman thereby revealing her bottom. The local motions as though he's about to put his finger in her bum hole!

How come this didn't cause the same level of controversy as nipplegate?

Here's the offending advert/cover:

That isn't a woman, it's a baby (Wally's son Herbert, start of 'Herbert's Dummy Run').

It didn't cause a controversy because it's a silly ad for a silly computer game and has no bearing in reality whatsoever, from a time when people weren't ridiculously over sensitive to political correctness and being offended for the sake of it.

Oh dear!
It's been explained to you now but maybe spend a little more time researching before being offended.

I remember there being something in the letters page of one of the mags about it around the time, may have been Crash, but it was more along the lines of what was that guy trying to do to Herbert.

Surely the finger is beckoning the kid to come back and has grabbed the pants to stop him. Or perhaps the guy is a proctologist and they check earlier in paradise.

But at no point does that make me think that a sexual assault is in progress

It definitely looks like an anal probe is about to take place in all of that chaos.

lol. Ok I didn't realise it was a baby. Fair enough.

I wasn't offended btw - I don't really take offence at stuff like this. I was more interested in the lack of response at the bum finger when there was outrage at showing a nipple.

Having read these replies though - obviously it's also ambiguous at what the finger is doing. :)

Wilma and Herbert are abducted; we can see Wilma in the background tied up and Herbert is being lured away into the jungle.

Yes the natives are caricatures , and yes they would probably cause offence today, but back then they were no big deal. What WAS a big deal was the unnecessary and gratuitous use of women's bits in what was ostensibly a kid's magazine. They also (usually) had absolutely nothing to do with the games being portrayed , (esp Psycho Pig UXB).

They're cannibals probably going to eat Wilma and Baby Herbert, loads of games had similar scenes such as Konami's Tarzen/Jungle Hunt/Pirate Pete with Jane hanging over the pot with the canibals. Besides I remember in everyone's a Wally manual they said "Wilma's job is to do the shopping" they're not sexist they're just wallies

Don't feel bad for Captain Bob, whose agent was a real smarty.
