NES Repro Consoles query

Post by Lorfarius » Thu Jun 23, 2016 6:32 am

I'm getting the itch to go for a complete PAL NES collection again after coming so close 6 years ago (just 4 games off a full set!!). The original hardware is a bit poop these days especially with the loading issues and picture quality so I've been thinking a repro would be better especially for getting a decent picture but no idea which is best. Don't want to spend a fortune and the likes of a Retron 5 its too expensive for the use I'll get out of it so what would you guys recommend?

Seen one of these but no idea if it'll do PAL games

I always liked the Generation NEX.

Retron 5 is a great option if you do decide to go for it.

I recently found an N64 style Famiclone in a local Cash Converters for £12 exactly like the one here:
http://ultimateconsoledatabase.com/famiclones/aroo.htm

It played the games on the bundled 84 in 1 without issue (mostly old school arcade ports like Galaga and Dig Dug) and it's waiting on a 60-72 pin adaptor before I can try any regular NES games. The console is of Chinese origin and therefore of PAL designation.

I want something quickly and cheapily. Retron 5 is too expensive I'm afraid. Also don't want to be messing with multiple adaptors think the likes of repros I posted above will do the trick but really need to know if it'll do PAL.

Get a normal one and disable the 10NES chip, makes them load perfectly

Unless the cart slot is naff

Going for a full collection will be A LOT more expensive than it was 6 years ago

Yep but I don't want to drop a fortune on an original console with RF. It's being played on a HDTV.

The NES has compo out

But playing it on an LCD is allkinds of wrong, it just looks awful,

TBH if you are gonna play it on a modenr TV you might as well get a Retron 5, it has fancy tricks to make them look better on a LCD
If you are going to try for a full collection thats gonna be expensive, why play them on a £15 clone machine that wont play all games and will more than likely have issues?

Prinnys got a point, why pay all that money for the games if you are going to skimp on the hardware

There is actually a new one coming out called the AVS:

It will be HDMI ready and will read both NES and Famicom carts in both PAL and NTSC.

Because right now all I want is a big pile of games I don't have close to £200 to blow on a console and hope to buy carts at the same time. When I have a bit more cash going spare I'll pick up the system. Christ guys I just want to know if a repro can run PAL games I don't want 20 questions about it  A cheap repro console will do the trick for me now.

And Prinny you are talking rubbish. HDTV's are just fine for retro games I've got a 19" one I use for Youtube footage and they look great on it no matter the system.

As I said
It will play most, some will be glitchy, some wont work

With small LCDs its hit and miss, a lot are pants
When you see somebody playing it on a 50" 4k ones

Thats when it gets really wrong

Not related to the post but it's the first time I've seen you post in a bit Lorfarious.

I miss Nes-bit :)

Do you have any grand ideas for the future or is that a project long gone and dead in the water?

Ps:
Good luck with the collecting - even if you're going for carts it's gonna be 3-5 time more expensive than when we collected CIB all that time ago!

I'm usually lurking in the background somewhere even if not posting much these days :D

I've been mulling around a few different sites recently, last idea was for the Atari Lynx but I still have a full copy of NES-Bit tucked away. Could make a return one day, just have to find the time to create regular content.

I picked up a Retron 2 whilst in America last year for $50 and it works fine with everything both Pal and Ntsc that I throw at it apart from Rad Racer (which I was peeved about) that had graphical glitches and Kick Off (which is probably a blessing) which also has graphical issues, aside from these two all the other Pal games play at 60hz which is always preferable as far as I'm concerned.
For my Rad Racer thrills it's back to my Mattel edition Nes!
