Mastertronic book Kickstarter

Post by markopoloman » Tue May 24, 2016 10:10 pm

I'm loving these retro kickstarter books at the mo! Just got Boyo's C64 one and it is fantastic and so much nicer as a hardback book.

And now there is a Mastertronic book going for it. A bit of an odd kickstarter TBH as there are 2 books to consider: a 256 page for £25 or a 512 page for £40

Normally it would be choices of hardback/bonus posters/games etc. with the higher level, but this is a little daft! I have backed it though and obviously gone for the 512 page version.
Couldn't resist as my memories of mastertronic are very happy memories. :D

Ah yes, good old Mastertronic games. I remember the artwork on the C64 tape boxes being amazing and very enticing (especially compared to the game itself after the epileptic fit inducing 20 minute load time).

Although Kikstart 2 was immense. And Finders Keepers...

Don't suppose Witchfinder has any input? I followed his video Mastertronic Chronicles reviewing all the C64 (and a few more that weren't on C64) games.

It's payable in AUS $ so I imagine it's being done over there?! Looks well set out though.

Finally got a look at the Kickstarter, the two tier book idea seems sound in this case, either the core book with all the £1.99 games or an expanded one that covers the rest of their games too. Think I might opt for the big one.

This looks pretty sweet. We're quite low on mastertronic content.

There's quite a few Kickstarter gaming books atm, they all look awesome. Unfortunately without a ton of money you have to be selective!

There's one with about 20 hours to go, it's way on target- An updated book on Oli Freys artwork by Fusion retro. As a fan of retro gaming and art I just could not resist pledging for this superb book. And for a 50 quid pledge, you can choose a perk of one of the other books (signed) as well- Ocean, US gold, C64 etc. I opted for the Ocean option, so really excited to get two fab books. Especially of course a book on Olis art signed by Oli. And if the goal hits 25K an extra Spectrum book is thrown in for all backers. This is the best kickstarter I've been involved in, terrific add on perks :D

This Mastertronic book looks wonderful as well, torn but had to make a choice as couldn't pledge for both! Had to be Oli's book for me :)

Edited note: The kickstarter for Oli's art book has 8 hours to go, and has now hit the 25k mark, meaning pledgers do get the Spectrum book as well. Fantastic :D The next perk level will be 27k, which is a ZZap64/Crash! double sided bookmark. The other extras on the way to this level have been a badge set of ZZap/Crash Oli images and a slipcover for the hardcover book. I really like the way they have done these kickstarter perks, most seem a little stingy or else are trying to simply get add on sales, and overinflated ones at that.

Saddened that this one looks like it is probably going to fail and agree the pricing/reward structure isn't great but I adore Mastertronic and MAD so it had to be the £40 for me :)

Given that it's a book about Mastertronic, there's a real irony about that.

Still 3 days to go and less than 5000 AUD to target, so might make it. I see no issue with price for what's on offer, its comparable to others, and I can do without all the tat that usually gets added. Bump it on any forums etc and hopefully it'll get some more views and backers, there's always a little rush at the end.

Yeah, it's rare that you get one that comes so close and doesn't make it. If nothing else, I'd think the project's originators might well stump up the cash. Mind you, I'm sure they'd much rather get the rest of it from the public if possible, so don't be too surprised if it doesn't make it until the last hour or so.

I was very tempted, but £40 is too much. I don't want half a book, so it's all or nothing. I'm probably going to go for nothing.

I spent more than £40 on the Spectrum Bibles. There's been a few others in the £20-30ish range. £40 is the upper end, but it'll be a lovely big colour book of memories.

Just a fiver will get you the PDF of the big book. Every bit helps, and a fiver is quite reasonable for a decent sized ebook.

Well, it's passed the goal, and also one of the stretch goals (16 extra pages). I somehow managed to talk myself into backing it this morning.

We need about £730 for the next 16 pages, though I think that might be too much to ask for in just over 4 hours, when it finishes.
