Android controllers

Post by greenberet79 » Fri May 20, 2016 6:40 am

Anyone have one? Are they mostly crappy plastic? Getting a new phone next month, am tempted to get a controller. The Moga Pro looks best bet, though it's a bit steep at £40.

(I posted a similar thread about two years ago, but never bought one!)

I got one of the cheaper Moga ones, it is now sat in the loft not doing anything....that is the extent to my gaming on android, lol! For what I did use it for, the supported Android games and emulation, it worked totally fine and I didn't have any major issues.

The Shield Controller is superb (don't know if it works on any other android device though).

I also have a couple of MadCatz C.T.R.L. controllers. They are pretty good.

Cool. I guess this market still hasn't sorted itself out yet. Not sure it ever will TBH.

You can use the Shield Controller on any Android device that supports WiFi Direct, which should be anything from the past couple of years at least and some older devices; given that the Shield K1 is easily the best Android tablet in terms of price/performance it's worth considering if you're upgrading too. the Moga and Madcatz controllers should work with anything that supports Bluetooth and there are very few Android devices that don't have it.

The biggest issue is finding games and emulators that'll support controllers rather than just the touch screen. Lots of good ones do, but many don't, and older ones that aren't being developed any more won't ever.

Is there anyhting like Joy2Key or Xpadder for Android that sorts that out? My Wikipad has a joypad mapper function, but I don't know if these things are generally available.

Pretty much every decent joypad comes with some sort of mapper app. They're never going to work well for every game though as touch and tilt controls don't always map well to game controllers.

I got one a couple of years back.

It seemed to work OK, it was a bit fiddly, I can't even remember the brand, it's been gathering dust since the day after I bought it though. I just couldn't be arsed with it.

In fact if you want it Greenberet79, you can have it just pm me your address. May as well have someone getting use out of it!

Yeah, it seems to work just fine, I've just found the instructions too.

Apparently it's an ipega controller, one of these....

Thanks to the Hawk, got my Bluetooth controller this week :)

Had a go of it last night - seemed to hook up to my phone pretty easily. Played a couple of Orange Pixel games - they produce "retro" style games. The controller is nice to use as well. Will see how it goes!

In a totally unrelated note, the Smiley Face on the RG forum is quite sinister!

The Ipega works really well. Bluetooth connects straight away and it's easy to set up with games and emulators.

My only minor criticism would be the thumbsticks are a bit fast and loose, and the left sided direction pad is too close to the left thumbstick.

But apart from that it's ace, I would recommend it!
