As for point 4, nah, I reckon the C64 and Speccy have roughly even software catalogues. GB64 is now past 25k entries for example.

I'm a C64 fan, always have been.

But there are some impressive titles on Spectrum, and it is better at vector graphics.

And both have seen some superb homebrew/indie titles in the last 20+ years since commercial companies abandoned the format.

Generally, yes, but even C64 can surprise with things like Mercenary.

Neither.

Commodore 128 was better. :D

I really like both and it is hard to pick and both have games that are improbable to complete.

Commodore on graphics and games just shades it for me.

The ol schoolyard battle!

For me it was the C64 when I finally got one. But having said that I loved my Spectrum, and thank Sir Clive sincerely, as without his wonderful ZX81 and then Spectrums I would never have afforded a computer as early as I bought them. An Atari or C64 was never going to be possible in a low wage family and saving for what I wanted on my paper run money :)

C64. It's the better system all round and offers so much more in pretty much every area whether it's gaming, collecting or hardware/software development.

Times have changed as well. The Speccy used to be the budget option but there are so many different hardware variations (even between models) that it can be a real money pit if you don't know what you're looking for. Plus, original Spectrum models have entered "vintage" territory and the BIN men are asking ridiculous sums for even a basic set-up.

The C64, by contrast, is relatively straightforward. A C64 is pretty much a C64 and an SD2IEC will give you a nice chunk of games with very little expense. If you want more, you can get the much more comprehensive (and expensive) 1541 Ultimate or, if you want the real deal, you can get a disk drive and a tape deck and explore the myriad delights to be found with C64 originals.

People say 'monochrome' as if it's a bad thing. I personally love the monochrome look.

It's like in music - 'mono' was always better sounding than 'stereo'.

After all, Mono Is King!

To be honest, I don't know what a SID chip is now let alone back when I was a young'n playing it. :D

I never had any faults or problems with it, but sounds like that may have been one of the many reasons why it didn't sell as well as the 64.

Not a close contest in any way, C64 all the way. Better is some aspects, way better in others :) And I have a sort of veneration for the SID chip and its amazing sound, love to listen to SID music to this day. Tel, Maniacs of Noise or Hubbard and Beats headphones, it doesn't get much better than that.

Despite this I get the love for the Speccy, especially in this forum and on the magazine, it was a nice, cheap machine from the UK with many great games and a lot of programming genius to have made them possible. I'll always have a hard time understanding the love for the Amstrad, though. I should just give up.
