If true, how the heck will it work? You need a 600+ Euro graphics card for 4K gaming on the PC and still you can forget about maxing out games at a rock solid 60 fps. Considering the PS4 struggles to hit a steady 1080p/60fps in it's more graphically intense games, I fail to see how this will be a thing. Sounds like more what the PS5 could be like and that's still a few years away.

Not convinced this is a good move. Anything that blurs the lines between console generation never seem to do all that well.

It would be a bad move as they will just censored off all the current PS4 owners.

Pah, Antmeister - you peasant - I have myself a fully installed IMAX 4K cinema for my gaming needs, as well as my Bugatti Veyron in the garage. No - I jest. You do make a good point - I suppose this product is positioned for the future though. Apparently, there are 4K Blu rays coming - and Sky might be launching a 4K service next year - that might get 4K TVs moving.

If the PS2 and PS3 (and Xbox 360) are anything to go by they usually go down the road of creating a slim version before the next generation console.

The best thing to do is believe it when we see it...

I play WoW in 4K on a crapsky 750 nVidia thing - lovely monitor on my pc. But I don't have more than 1080p for tv.

Well so far it's unprecedented for consoles to move on that quick but someone has to make the first move. In pretty much all other areas of tech we are used to a yearly cycle of iteration so it's only a matter of time before we see something similar in the console market.

Would of thought they would wait and see what Nintendo is up to with the NX first *CoughPlaystationMoveCough*

Probably doubtful unless its some kind of fancier more pricer PS4 that does all that "make your PS4 games look stunning in 4K" and maybe even thrown in that PS123 backwards compatibility too....

There's no timescale on this and I doubt it's coming soon. To make the jump from 1080p gaming to 4K, with frame rates and detail levels remaining roughly the same, they'd be looking at getting four times the graphical processing power out of the GPU. I doubt AMD could deliver more than a 20% increase in per-core efficiency, so they'd either have to massively increase the number of shaders, or the clock speed, or probably both.

I think we will see extensive 4K support in the form of upscaling existing games and output for video streaming services sooner though. I just wouldn't expect anything more than a more modest increase in processing power that's more aimed at accommodating VR than 4K graphics.

4K tv's aren't that expensive now and its comes as standard on TV's from about £400 upwards, so pretty much mainstream i'd say. I have a nice 55" Sony one myself. If i could have a console that would fully utilise its potential, i'd be all over it like a rash :D

2004 game though.

I doubt PlayStation players would be okay with PS2/PS3 visual quality at 4K for new titles. And I very much doubt AMD would cram one of these in there while still keeping an affordable price. It would also divide the user base which is not something console manufacturers would want.
