This is what I'm very much hoping for. Keyboard is for me and many others an essential item on a Spectrum. Having used various emulators on computers and portable systems over the last 20 years, it's something that makes the experience much more pleasurable and easy to use. I'm not asking for much, even a touch screen overlay would suffice for most cases.

What I'd class as doing it right would be a Spectrum 48k rubber keyboard design, that runs all Spectrum software (inc. 128k), has HDMI output, an SD card slot, and a USB slot for plugging in a joystick, though adding an actual joystick port would be much better so I could plug my Zipstick directly into the back.

Of course this wouldn't have a screen, but I wouldn't want to play Spectrum games while out and about.

The problem with putting HDMI output in it is the licensing fees. They really don't work out favourably for small production runs; in particular, there's a fee of $10,000 a year just for joining the program, plus the costs of compliance testing, and then a per-unit fee on top of that. If they were making 10,000 or more of them a year it'd probably be worth doing; for just 3000 though it doesn't seem worth the hassle, especially since you'd think that most people would just use the built in display.

As for the Spectrum rubber keyboard, I believe another company has a product along those lines. Or you could just mod a dead Spectrum as a USB keyboard for around the same price.

Composite is preferable to HDMI for me because I still use a CRT for everything and don't even own a modern flatscreen television.

Was gonna say the same as Matt, HDMi would be great but theres much more cost involved

Then again if they have 300k from the campaign perhaps we could have gold plated ones as well ! ;)

Could the do as the C64 DTV did and have contacts on the board for expansion to HDMI without incurring the licence cost of full HDMI inclusion?

Can you mod a DTV to output HDMI? I thought the best you could get out of it was S-Video.

I'd think that it'd be possible to implement DVI, which is royalty free and HDMI is backwards compatible with, but that would be without audio. Implementing the full HDMI protocol would surely require licensing, even if the final connector is left out.

No, c64DTV can't do HDMI, I just meant designing the board to mod later.

I daresay most of the 2nd hand original Vegas will be in decent condition, only used a couple of times as a novelty then stuck in a drawer.

DVI is good enough so you can avoid the costs and have a dvi -> hdmi cable.

Now that's what I call a purist!! :)

The Vega is probably not for me as I like the CRT neon-glow of the Spectrum's display too much (which AV takes away), but it does look interesting even if a full keyboard option never becomes available.

"Despite claiming an October 2016 release, the console is yet to appear. Worse still is that the company is reportedly being silent, even when backers are reaching out for a refund. Could this be vapourware? We've reached out to the company for an official statement, but until we hear back, we'd advise against parting with your hard earned cash."

Delays are frustrating but ultimately they are livable with if you trust the makers behind the product & you can get decent communication from them.

The whole thing seems to have been really badly handled, but the recent update give backers a bit of hope at least.
